Can anyone please tell me some pros and cons about creighton University? the school is hardly ever discussed. I have an interview there on Halloween (!) and could use some advice.

Gavin, why do you think that they have such a spectacular program? (based on your posts from last year)

Thank you all...

They don't have specialty programs which is good because you have more selection of difficult endo, extractions, cases overall and therefore better experience. This is bad however if you want to specialize yourself because specialists/residency programs aren't as accessible to observe/get your foot in the door/get letters of recommendations from existing residency directors.

I thought Creighton did not have interviews. Did they actually invite you for an interview of did you schedule one on your own. When I called they said they don't have interviews, but if I wanted to come visit I could, but it wouldn't effect their decision about admitting someone.

Listen, about going out there on your own will to do an interview, take that with a grain of salt. In other words, TRUST them when they say it won't affect their admissions policy.

I flew out there last year and looked around the school for 30 minutes, only to find out that NOBODY was available to interview with me, much less talk to me.

A complete waste of an airline ticket.

One of the downsides: having to wear a shirt and tie every day to class. Ouch.

dr_benj,
yes, i shceduled my own interview.

Gavin,
i see that your views about the school have dramatically changed since last year. Were they expecting you or did you just decided to show up? i have made an appointment, and i believe that someone will be expecting me there. if not, i will at least know how much they care about their students.
Also, If the interviews wouldnt affect the admission, then why would the admission chair take the time to interview all the visiting applicants himself?

BTW: iS not having a speciality program an advantage?? i understand that you will have exposure to more complicated cases, but are you really trained in those and allowed to treat patients with cases that normally a speciality student would do??

Comet,
I spoke personally to the admissions chair on the phone and he told me straight out that people visiting makes no difference in their admissions. He said if I wanted to visit to learn more about the campus and see if Creighton would be a good school for me then he would schedule a tour. I highly doubt if you go there will be any sort of "interview" whatsoever. Just giving you a heads up because I know how expensive all these trips become and don't want you to waste money if it is all in vain. If you decide to go let me know how it turns out. good luck.

Whatever your feelings about Halloween, don't wish the adcoms "Happy Martin Luther Day."

Thx Dr. benj,

I have already purchased my ticket and paid for the hotel, so even if i wanted to cancel my visit, it would have been too late. I have never seen the school, but their program seems to be great and i like it. i have also heard lots of good things about the school itself. So, i am going. i will let you know how things go.
