Has anyone here looked into Creighton University? I was just looking through their distance learning program/curriculum and wondered how 'good' of a program it is. For me, as a mom with family obligations, it seems like it would be an interesting alternative. I did take two grad science classes via distance learning many moons ago and got a lot out of them. It appears that the labs are done in on-campus blocks during the summers and that you do the required internships.

Would it be difficult to get a job after going through a program like this? Perhaps it would not be seen as a 'real' degree? Also...do you think it would affect the ability to secure a residency/fellowship?

hmmmm....just looking....

I don't know if Creighton is a good school or not, but i think it's pretty easy to get in. one good thing about creighton is that there is no interview. I just turned in my app earlier this year and I got in.
good luck

Also...do you think it would affect the ability to secure a residency/fellowship?

I wouldn't say it would preclude you from getting a fellowship, but i don't think it'd be your best option, solely bc so much of prepping for a residency and such is stuff you learn outside of the basic curriculum (meeting different profs, volunteering in different groups, networking w/upperclassmen) that's not really amenable to distance learning progs. I would think those programs are geared towards people who wanna be involved with strictly pharmacy care (i.e. a lot of folks who are gonna land up in retail) rather than policy, management, or research. I'm pretty naive about the limitations of getting your degree in that fashion though. I think a good chunk of those enrolled in that program are people with other careers who want to switch and become a "general pharmacist". Dunno.

mommd:
i think creighton's online program is accredited. so technically it is equivalent to the traditional one. like tri said, there are some downsides of the online program. it also depends on what you wanna do after you get your pharmd degree. if it's retail pharm, then i think it's ok.
if you like to know more about their DL program, you can call up the school. i'm sure they're more than happy to tell u about their program.
good luck.

These are all very good points worth considering. I'm not really interested in retail so it may not be for me. I may contact the U of MN (the closest U to me) and see what they have to say at some point.....hmmmm. It is an interesting option, but it may not be worth it in the end.

I wanted to add a little Creighton update to the mix...though I have by no means made any type of decision at this point...I just thought that I'd let everyone know what I found out.

The didactic portions are offered through DL, but all labs (clinical and otherwise) are done in 2 week all-day blocks in the summer on-campus. Students are generally housed in the dorms and eat, sleep and breathe their labs as opposed to stretching them out over the semester. I spoke with one of the admissions people and she said that the distance students have a lot of contact both with each other and with the instructors and that it is a close-knit group of people even though they come from different areas. Most of the students are older (like moi😀 ) with family responsibilities. They tend to be as successful as their on-campus counterparts on the boards. All clerkships are arranged through the help of the U at accredited sites that are local to the students.

I have not gotten an answer yet about the issue of residency/fellowship. In any case...I wanted to add the update in case anyone else is kind of interested.

Nice work mommd!! I was actually born in Omaha. My dad was teaching econ at the Univ. of Nebraska at Omaha. My parents (Third Generation Japanese Americans living in an Irish neighborhood) loved that place. The humidity from the Missouri would not sit well w/me at all though. At any rate, right on.
