I am currently in a med-peds residency and am interested in critical care. My problem is it would be hard to specialize in med and pedi CC (different training modalities and all that). I had heard from an anesthesiologist that if you were double boarded in pediatrics and anesthesiology, you would be able to be certified to work in the PICU. Is this true? Also, does the same translate to adult CC? I have already posted this in the Critical care forum, and was just wondering if any others would have any more info. Thanks!

No. A peds critical care certificate can only be obtained by someone who undergoes a specific pediatric critical care fellowship (usually 3 years). Some programs can combine that CC fellowship with the anesthesiology residency, thus shortening the training time (for both) a couple years. But there is no automatic double-boarded-work-in-picu rule.
As for adults, a one year fellowship in CC is required.

For someone boarded in pediatrics there are five year fellowships available. At the end of the fellowship you will be eligible to sit for the boards in anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, and pediatric critical care. You could then also do a one-year fellowship in adult critical-care. Thus after 10yrs (4yrs for a med-peds residency, 5yrs for an anesthesia/peds fellowship and 1yr for a adult CCM fellowship) you would be Superdoctor.

Here are two such programs:

Thanks guys.... I guess I might have to choose... *sigh*
