  1. Resident [Any Field]
I am currently a CA2 and interested in critical care or pain. I never thought I would enjoy critical care, but I do. But I have questions, so if someone is out there with practice experience or knows someone please help me answer these questions

1. What kind of jobs are available for CC trained anesthesia, does it have to be in an academic center or are there jobs in private groups and if so how do you find out about them? (Its impt to me to live where ever I want and thats easy just practicing anesthesia)

2. How is the pay for CC trained anesthesia, everyone tells me its not anymore then a general anesthesiologist or worse

Any other info would be great, it sucks because my program can not give me much information and I was hoping to reach out here for some help

Thanks

I work in a private group where the Anesthesia group provides the majority of coverage for the ICU. Its not a closed unit system, but when patients get real sick it acts like it. 4 of us do the majority of the ICU work, but overnight and on the weekends other anesthesiologists within the group pick up the slack. Beyond academics the jobs for CC anesthesiologists exist but are complicated. My group is rare, luckily its exists in an area near where my wife and i wanted to settle down. For the most part you'll have to choose what you want your full time position to be. Critical Care or Anesthesia. For example you choose to be a full time CC doc. you work 22 wks per year to meet your FTE. In the off weeks you could work out an arrangement with a local anesthesia group for a day time position. This is what my co-fellow did when he graduated fellowship. How do you find the jobs? Pick up the phone and start cold calling hospitals, anesthesia groups in the areas you want to live. Never to early for that kind of leg work.

Currently the hospital pays the group for the ICU coverage. It works out to more money than what could be earned if we "ate what we killed" in the unit. As a result the hospital gets icu docs and the group gets enough reimbursement to make up for the lost OR anesthesiologist. In the end it also gives us more respect and therefore pull in the hospital. So as far as pay goes, the average is definitely less if you do just do CC, but by choosing to do anesthesia as well you should make out fairly well. But then again if a cushy high paying low stress job is what really matters to you then CC is not for you.

Feel free to PM if you have more specific ?'s

Gerald Macicoli is someone you might want to look up and talk to...I just listened to him talk at the ASA.

At my current job, no one wants help with ccm coverage until the sun has gone down👎
