hey guys - i posted this on the em forum earlier and got some good responses, but could always use more input!

does anyone know (or know how to find out) the best critical care programs in the country. I would like to set up a rotation during my m4 year and could use some (actually, a lot) of advice.
thanks!

Hi there,
What kind of critical care are you interested in doing? If surgery is your ultimate goal, you can't go wrong with Baltimore Shock-Trauma. If you are more of the medicine type, try to find a ICU rotation that will allow you to have plenty of teaching and hands-on experience. Inova-Fairfax Hospital Internal Medicine ICU is one of the best for the above. You will get top-notch teaching by a young and energetic staff who will make sure that your are ready for internship anywhere and that you can function at a high level in ICU.

You also can't go wrong with any critical care at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. If you want to go the Mayo route, you have to get your application in right now for the choice periods. July 1st is the deadline for the September-October-November months. Again, Mayo Clinic has world-class teaching by an excellent faculty. There's not much to distract you in Rochester except medicine.

Pick up a copy of the Marino ICU book. It's easy to read and full of good info.

Good luck!

the surgical icu at hopkins is outstanding. very academic and varied. try to arrange for a time with dr. lipsett.

the highest yield month of medical school....hands down.

critical care at university of chicago is excellent -- the attendings there are the ones who wrote "Priniciples of Critical Care" -- one of the main references in the field.
