Hello everyone. Being an avid forum user on a canyoneering site I have been on the receiving end of plenty re-asked questions and thought, "this again??" Well here comes one from me that I anticipate make cause the same response in you. So, feel free to jeer a little if you must. If you'd like some material to go off of, I considered myself somewhat intelligent until it took me 4 times to master the captcha on the registration page.

More seriously..

I grew up with the idea of being a doctor. I did well in high school, 4.0 and 32 on ACT. And after two semesters in college (classes including anat & phys, statistics, and art history - death to memorizing 100s of painting, no offense for art lovers -) I have a 4.0. I understand highschool is nothing compared to college, my act score was good not great, and my college classes have yet to be too grueling, but I do feel - with lots of study - that I am a capable student. Time required to become a doctor was my initial turn off. Then, time required to be a doctor was another turn off. So I turned to another health care area that was interesting to me, nurse anesthesia. I did quite a bit of research, interviewed a CRNA, did some more research yada yada yada, and felt that I had really made a good choice. Now I've finished pre reqs for the nursing school and applying and I have this nagging inside that wants me to consider doctor. And as I really think about it, the idea of doing the same thing day after day after day - administering anesthesia - and doing it more or less under the direction of a doctor is beginning to appear somewhat boring to me to say nothing of what it may seem to me after 20 years of doing it. I'm still quite sold on CRNA due to the amount of family time I would have (this is the most important factor for me), job satisfaction (contradictory to what I previously said, but the CRNA's with whom I have spoken all seem to enjoy their job), and potential salary. That said, I love making decisions, figuring things out, I really enjoy school, and I do like to be in charge. My main fear is my future family and the time I would spend with them. And, if it has anything to do with it, I am 21 yrs old.

Technically my question would be, so CRNA or Doctor? So if you'd like to answer that feel free. I'm also interested in your general impressions about my current situation.

Much thanks!

As this forum is intended for people pursing medical degrees, you will likely get biased answers. That said, if you have the talent to become a doctor, why not? It offers more flexibility. You will have the freedom to dictate your priorities, whether it's career or family.

Have you thought about why you want to become a doctor? For example, would you like diagnosing and treating patients rather than just administering anesthesia? If you don't plan on becoming an anesthesiologist, then the 2 are pretty different fields. If there's something about MD that draws you towards it and you can see yourself doing that job, then you should go for it.

Thanks for the responses. This nagging inside has now become the subject of most of my thoughts. Honestly, along with risking family time, I do fear med school. Having never experienced it I can only go off what I hear, and I have heard some pretty intense things. And deep down I wonder if I will be able to do it. I have never once questioned my ability to become a CRNA, I am ignorant on the specific difficulty of the course as well, but it has always been a safe choice for me. As if I were settling, or compromising. Hmm...I wonder if I really want to answer my future child's question regarding what he/she should do for a profession with, "Well, I just did what I thought wouldn't be the hardest thing."

When you are 70 years old, which one will irk you more?

1) I wish I could have become a doctor

2) I wish I could have spent more time with my children

Only you can tell.

Ill preface this by saying I did not read ur whole post OP. Also, I hate to say this but OP I think u will get better advice from medical students and residents (those who r going or will go into anesthesia (i.e. not me)) than premed students. The main reason is as a premed, and trust me I was there and felt the same way, you r so caught up on the doctor status and MD and the glory and this and that that its hard to fathom why someone wouldn't wanna do this. Being where I am now as a MS3 I can tell you I have a very good understanding and appreciation for smart people who do not want to waste their life in medical school and residency. With that being said I would never be a mid level because my personality craves expertise in a field and I'd rather be in a non-clinical field making less than work under someone because of knowledge deficiency.. So you really need to figure out 1) if u even like anesthesia 2) if u do, do u like medicine? bc medical school is not anesthesia.. it takes a while till ull be specializing in that 3) mid level making less/always having to answer to an MD vs. being the MD 4) family life..although i rlly dk how hours r in crna vs md anes.. where I am now they seem to work similar hours.
