Among people I've spoken with, I've gotten mixed opinions about Crocs. I know they're comfortable, a little ugly, and popular among hospital personel...but should they just be a women's shoe or do men still look professional in them in a working (hospital) environment?

Please chime in on the poll above and if you have any insight, I'd really appreciate it!

PersonallY I'd say they were acceptable for NOBODY. Danskos are as ugly-and-functional as I'd say was allowable . . .

I think they are okay for guys. I have ones without the holes in them and those, I think, look alright on guys.

I couldn't agree more. Crocs are absolutely HIDEOUS. I understand that they may be comfortable and cheaper than Danskos, but at some point one simply must sacrifice for the sake of fashion/ looking good!

Why is there no option for "nobody should ever wear crocs ever."
I say burn them all!

lol, i suppose i should have included that one...i guess i just didn't anticipate the degree of animousity towards them from some people

I think they look fine, I will definitly pick up a pair soon. I think my friend just picked up a black pair for around $30. From what my friends tell me they are "standing" shoes and they are difficult to walk around with for long periods of time.

If you're already wearing pajamas (scrubs), I wouldn't be too concerned about making any fashion statements with your shoes. 😉

Comfort comes first. Crocs, as gawdawful as they look, are pretty darn comfortable.

Yeah, they're alright, in ANATOMY LAB! Along with the other clothes you are going to burn

Megadon, do you mean to say that Crocs are good...but just in situations where you're wearing scrubs anyway...or that all Crocs should be creatively burned with old anatomy clothes because you think Crocs are terrible?

I'm confused by your meaning.

I guess I should specify why I asked to begin with...in the OR I have a tough time getting my sneakers into shoecovers but Crocs apparently fit quite nicely and are comfortable for standing for long hours so I was thinking about buying a pair and didn't know if they were appropriate hospital attire for men (I've seen mostly females and nurses wearing them, not many males, docs, or med students).

I suppose you could wear them when you're an attending. Of course, then you can afford actual shoes. As a medical student you will (rightfully) be mocked mercilessly if you wear Crocs.

Look, I'm a MS2 with a bit of foot fetish. Crocs are about the least appealing shoes for anyone, behind clogs. Are they practical for anatomy lab, oh yeah. Are they practical for surgical rounds, haven't been there yet. I guess from my point of view, sneakers are a lot more appealing than crocs. Ask me again in another year. But man, they're ugly. Burks are hotter than crocks.

Besides reasons of sheer hideousness, I really would go with Danskos over crocs. They're really comfortable for long hours in the OR, and they're also ok for walking, which Crocs apparentely are not. I tried to get away with sneakers for about a week, but it's just not possible. Your feet will be crying out with pain you didn't imagine was even possible.

Seriously though, danskos are worth the investment in my mind. Oh, and I don't even bother to wear shoe covers. I just wash my shoes off if something gets on them.

yeah, i tried wearing my dress shoes for the first week of third year and my feet ached at the end of the day (my feet are very flat). i switched to danskos and the next day my feet did not hurt after 30 hrs of on call. imho, who gives a crap about what shoes look while you are working long hours- go with what is most functional.

Yup. And for those of us with flatter feet - Danskos are absolutely horrible. Crocs are great for that, no matter how ugly.

I agree ....maybe if you are a cute 4 year old in summer clothing and even then i think that is a push

no one should wear these - they're an eyesore.

Depends on what color. Stick with something neutral.

Birkenstock all the way!! I love mine.

Crocs really are not that comfortable. My cousin got me a pair as a congratulations-you-got-into-med-school present, and they have been helpful when I needed wateproof shoes for kayaking, but to wear around the house they are not very comfortable (to say nothing of blindingly ugly). The rubber sticks to bare skin and pulls at it. If I wear socks to protect my skin then they don't hurt as much, but they are still less comfortable than sneakers in my opinion, and if there is any dorkier fashion choice in the world than socks with crocs I haven't seen it (and my boyfriend is an engineer so please believe that I have seen some god-awful fashion).

That and the fact that there are HOLES IN THE SHOES...what a horrible idea.
Seriously why is unacceptable for both genders not an option?

Because I didn't anticipate that some people felt that way. In retrospect I should have included it.

What about the versions of Crocs that they make without holes? There's one version call the "off road" that only has a couple holes and then two versions that have absolutely no holes. The are the same rubber clog shape...are these versions more appropriate?

they're perfectly fine, for ages 13 and under.

danskos are best for those with flat feet... very comfortable!

I would never wear them because there are holes in the top. Theoretically could be dangerous, and it gets cold as the north pole here in the winter.

That being said, they are also UGLY. I'm not much for style, but I won't wear those.

A solid rubber (ok fine, closed cell resin) shoe without ventilation holes is a new problem entirely  But who knows, if you've worn the hole-free kind and don't find them too stifling and/or smell inducing, I guess those would be better safety wise.

I know! I saw some nurse wearing Crocs when I was on my trauma rotation, and a patient came in who was bleeding profusely. I could NOT take my eyes off the holes in her shoes. . .I know she got blood on her shoes, and I'm certain she must've gotten some in her shoes as well. Yuck! :scared:

Those things are NOT appropriate for hospital wear any more than flip-flops are.

I guess it is just a matter of preference. the poll results are equal as of my vote.

Nevermind. From the crocs website:

"Can I boil and then eat my Crocs™ shoes?

4 out of 5 Crocs, Inc. Customer Service Representatives in this study agreed that even though the shoes had a nice texture and looked tasty; they would not recommend eating the shoes."

http://www.crocs.com/contact_us/faqs/

i guess they really serve no purpose

Whatever happened to just good ol' gym shoes? You can get some mega ventilated running shoes, and are comfortable to stand in...not to mention walk in. As an added bonus, you can throw insoles in and make them even SOFTER if you want. Yowza!

I have never understood the crocs thing. I started seeing them when freshman on campus starting rolling in...they are right up there with Uggs. "Oh they are so comfortable and stylish!" .....as a guy I feel anger and frustration anytime I see either of those shoes. Disadvantage for a guy wearing crocs is that I MIGHT punch him in the face. Yes...I'm an angry person.

I prefer my New Balance sneakers...they can be washed, are very comfortable, much cheaper than Danskos, Merrells, etc. Can't say I've ever worn Crocs, but if kids at the playground are wearing them, then they've just become too mainstream for me. I am tempted to shill for them because a good friend owns stock...but heck, he makes enough money otherwise.

For the Croc haters here: http://www.ihatecrocs.com/

Uglier than O.J.'s Bruno Maglis.

I wear sneakers (NB or Saucony) with superfeet inserts. These inserts run about $35 but have been lifesavers for my flat feet esp for pulling 12 hour ED shifts where I don't sit down.

We run the same rig with sneakers.

Back to the what you wear in anatomy lab portion of this discussion, there seemed to be two camps. A sizeable minority wore crocs, including the ex-SEAL in the group next to mine. But I guess he figured no one would make fun of him (I would, but also was prior Navy). Then there was the sneaker group. No one wears shoe covers with their sneakers. It gross anatomy, but it's not that gross. As far as gender bias, they're ugly on everyone who has gone through puberty. Here comes the sexist comment, I know, but it's okay for girls, cause for every girl that wears hot shoes most of the time, we know there are some trolls in her shoe rack. But that's okay if she's willing to wear decent shoes 50% of the time. Guys, how many shoes do you own? One or two pair sneakers? Some flip flops and burks? At least one pair dress shoes? I've got three, black and cordova wingtips, and my rubbersoled loafers for school and the wards. How many pairs of shoes does my wife have? At least twenty. And no crocs (although there are some clogs back in that closet).

personally i think that they are just too ugly for me to wear.

in the past with volunteering at an ER i juse used cheerleading shoes. they are about the same weight as crocs but are so much nicer.

man . . . are you really progressing towards polling posts? You've definitely gone downhill. I think you need to quit SDN cold turkey before you become hopelessly addicted. Definitely not the guy (/girl preserving anonymity of course) I knew in high school.

Yea, yea, I know. I really should. Its not like I had anything better to do with this week, like say, roadtrip to NC (oh, snap!)

Ha ha ha, jk. I'm pretty busy up here too. UConn spares no expense on the paperwork.

You never did answer the question on the crocs though...

I'd say they're okay on anyone wearing scrubs. For us, the scrubs plus some comfortable but less fashionable shoe seems to be pretty much unisex attire. I bought a pair at the same time that I bought scrubs for Anatomy lab. They sell a version in uniform shops without holes in the top as above. I don't consider them a fashion statement and I would never be caught dead in them away from campus, but they are comfortable and don't absorb the smell of the lab as much as sneakers.

How about the no one option?? I just don't think they look professional on anyone.

Banned at my hospital. I rejoiced.

Maybe it is because I work in a blood bank, and yes I have seen some baaad spills, but I would never want to wear shoes with that many holes in them in a hospital.

Closed toed shoes for me...

Personally, I'd wear something without holes in the top, like the Super Birki from Birkenstock. If you're set on Crocs, there are some models listed on their Web site without holes, as others have mentioned.

damn kent didn't even think about that one...yikes!

I was thinking more along the lines of "here is my urine sample" sploosh.
