I have a question about course selection and I would love some input! You see this coming year will be my second year of University. I am in the midst of picking classes and I have come to a dilemma, you see a lot of my friends who I am not even sure are premed or not are taking Organic Chem, 1st Year General Physics and BioChem for there science courses and 2 fillers. Now here is my issue I'm not sure if taking all three sciences would be wise. I realize everyone has there issues in specific fields but I'm wondering if anyone has had a schedule sort of like that and how hard it was to manage? I was thinking just taking Organic and Physics with maybe some easy bio class and 2 fillers (most likely geography or psych) but for some reason the thought of being with friends tempts me to take Biochem as well!

Any input would be lovely!

Save Bio chem for later if there is any doubt, that way you can pay attention to these courses. After all, you need the other two for the MCAT and studying twice blows if you didn't learn the material the first time.

At my university Biochem is quite a torture because of the way the professor teaches the course. Generally students feel Ochem is torturous as well, but at my university Biochem is more awful than OChem. Ask around and see what the biochem class at your school is like, and from that judge if you should be taking it concurrently with these other courses.

Also at my school Ochem is a prereq for Biochem. I have received overrides to get into other science classes that had prerequisites that I had not taken yet. Even though I am not a 4.0 student, I was insistent and polite enough that the dean gave in. If you have done/are doing the same, I suggest you be very careful when considering if you are overloading yourself.

You can always take Ochem 1, see how you fair, and then take Ochem 2 and biochem 1 concurrently, yeah?

And maybe by then you'll have new friends. The second benefit to this option is that your friends will have taken the course and can give you advice as to how to take it. That is always better than having friends in a course with you (I think anyway!)

Why are you worried about what others are doing? If you think you can handle it, then do it. If not, then don't. Don't kill your gpa by trying to emulate your friends.

Check grade distributions for the classes on myEdu or from your university data (if available) to see really how hard the classes are. Then, you can decide how much you want to take on.

Yeah those have thoughts have played in my head. I am leaning more and more away from actually doing it.

Where I am at they don't require you to take Org before biochem, but most people don't I think. I do have issues with chemistry, so that's why I don't want to rush!

As for making friends, it's not really that haha, more like the friends I am with are pretty smart and I usually can get help in ample time, especially with labs!

The reason I ask here is because I don't know what is to much. I've never taken Biochem or Org. I've heard little about Org except for difficulty and Biochem almost nothing! Through in calc based physics and I just feel lost. I am making choices based off my own judgement in the end 😀
