Hey
sooo I'm not confident enough to start clinics yet because I still make bad crown preps (mainly over-converged preps), I have 2-3 months of vacation is there anything I can do to improve my skills? what burs do you guys like to use?

And how do I deal with patients? I don't want to be intimidating to them but I'm worried that I might become overly friendly !!

practice makes perfect. there is no harm in practicing on a typodont as well.

some faculty like crown preps more convergent than others, that's just the nature of dentistry--everyone has his/her own opinion about something. i have noticed though, at least at my school that more general faculty taper their preps more than prosth faculty. could just be a coincidence though.

and how do you deal with patients? be friendly, but be firm. for instance, if a patient keeps canceling on you for X,Y,Z reason but ''really wants to get work done'', my advice is to tell that patient that you understand where they're coming from but getting treatment at a school may not be the best option since things take time at a school. i've had to explain that to my patients before and some take it better than others....but you have to be firm.

During our screenings, we tell the patient straight up that it's school policy that they have to make it to appointment at least 2x/month and that if they miss more than 2 appointments, they may not be a good fit for DMD program. In terms of crown preps, just remember, it's only needed to be tapered enough to have an easier path of insertion and better flow of cement, overtapering will not be good for retention. I like to keep those concepts in mind before I do the preparation and be conservative. Once faculty checks, and if I need to taper more, I could always do so. But once I overtaper, there's no going back.
