Are crowns considered a cosmetic procedure or a medical necessity which would be partially covered by insurance? Would a 1st year dentist have the same skills as someone practicing for 5 years or does it take several years to fine tune your skills? Thanks in advance.

They're sometimes considered cosmetic (but frequently indicated much more for function than for cosmetics), but rarely (never in my experience) considered medically necessary for insurance purposes. Many dentists fresh out of school will do excellent work, while some dentists with 20 years of experience still can't cut a decent crown preparation; but for the most part more experience is better, just as with any other profession.
