Ok, I went to go get my last LOR today and my advisor tried to get me to pull my app! I am retaking the MCAT in August and he said it was a bad idea, that I should wait until next April! I don't wanna wait another year. I feel that I will not get much more quality studying done during school anyway. My app just got processed and my breakdown stinks kinda. I have to upward or downward trends - it is kinda wacky. The only postive part of my app is my upward trend of my science GPA - 3.12 to a 3.63 to a 3.71

But my overall cum is 3.13 BCPM, 3.39 AO, and 3.25 total. My MCAT again I am retaking. Can anyone raise my spirits about applying still? I know I can rock this MCAT but man he had a way of stomping on my confidence. But I am going for it!!!

Any helpful advice/comments? Please nothing mean or disheartening... I had enough of that for one day. 🙁

well what did you get on the MCAT the first time??

advisors don't know EVERYTHING about the process. they never went through admissions...and if they did it was a long time ago. I wish I knew about SDN back then. SDN can be more helpful than an advisor in many cases.

19O, yes I know it's bad but it did not reflect my practice exams... I know I can do so much better - is all hope lost? Today stunk so bad for me mentally...

Don't feel bad I got a 21P....damn VR section

Don't waste a year of your life based on an advisors recommendations! Apply now....take the Aug MCATS before they go electronic and show him up!
Begone...you have like 8 weeks.

The schools will wait for your new scores, who gives a crap about a 19 O. It will just look that much better to them when they see a huge improvement on the Aug. score!

Gosh, I love you all - please anyone else who feels the same or has positive things to say - keep this thread alive for all of us!

Of course dont let him bother you but are you mad preparing for the MCAT right now? This is your one chance to make it happen this year and NOT have to waste the year that I know you dont want to waste.

Good luck! 🙂

Oh yes, I AM studying now. I already feel like I am studying different and better - I have aamc exams coming up and I am so pumped to prove to myself that I can kick this test's butt! 😳

Don't forget you have probably established yourself as a "paper" MCAT taker. I know if I were you, I would not feel comfortable taking that test on computer...even if everyone has to.

good luck 😎

Are you planning on only applying to DO schools?

I am doing both. But would be so happy to go to either school. Learning OMM would be so great though - a great skill to have up on some of the other physicians.

I guess I am worried b/c my advisor is on the board for admissions at MSUCHM. He is older though, 76, and claims that my retaking the MCAT is not a "conservative" method to applying. Meaning, I should wait. I dunno he said some pretty cock-eyed things. But I know he means well. 😕

1. You already know that you need to do well on the MCAT. And you are already preparing to do just that.

2. Your GPA is making your application bleed. To counter it, you need to do 2 things: score at least a 28 on the MCAT, and apply to the "lower tier" MD schools, as well as DO schools (which you are doing). With a 28 MCAT and your GPA, you probably won't get any MD interviews. You might get some DO's though. With a >33 MCAT score + your GPA, you will probably get an interview or two at MD schools.

ROCK THE MCAT. And if in the end your GPA blocks you from med school, don't give up. There are special 1 yr Master's programs that are designed for people like you...... and me. They are designed to prove to med schools that you are capable of doing well in higher level courses.

And once again, ROCK THE MCAT. 🙂

from my experience, SDN is more helpful. exponentially more

Part of an advisor's job is to make the numbers for his school look good. Some advisors are known to tell students not to apply if they don't have >3.6, >30.

Several people have gotten into school, even with their pre-med advisor telling them they won't cut it. I'm one......In 6 days, I'll be a PGY2.....wonder where that old focker is now?????

Hahaha  , yeah man/girl (?) you can never tell.... Thanks for the post, so true!

If I had listened to my advisors, I wouldn't be starting medical school next month... F the negative advisors that don't know what they're talkin about. I know people who even got in with your MCAT but if you take it over and do well (since your GPA is not the best) you should be fine! Good luck!

Work as hard as you can, and show them that you really want this. So what one person thinks you can't make it. Use that as a reason to prove to him and everyone else that you can. What it comes down to is that YOU probably know that you've got exactly what it takes. The admissions process sucks, but you've just got to get through it. All throughout everyone's life and career there will be people who may doubt them and their abilities, use this as a test to prove to yourself that you'll be able to keep going and push through those obstacles.

I would only pull your application if you feel like you need to take a year off for yourself. I almost decided not to apply this past year when I didn't have my primaries in by mid-October, but I decided to buckle down and get them in. I'm so glad that I did, I'm starting school in 2 months and can't wait.

I had a bad advisor in undergrad too who actually tried to talk most of his advisees out of med school, if you can believe it. My undergrad didn't even have it's own med school, so it's not like he was trying to pad his school's numbers or anything. forget him, and forget 'conservative applying' do what you know you need to do. there's no sense in not going after your dreams at full speed.

Thanks, I and am sure others who might be in this situation appreciate these comments. Not to be too be cheesy, but you all are so spectacular and are truly a blessing - thanks for the support and great advice.

Keep it coming for us in the final, strenuous stretch! Love ya'll! 😍

If I had listened to my advisors I wouldn't be starting school this fall. My preprofessional and major advisor basically told me the game was over after my freshman year performance. After that point, SDN became my official advisor. I went through the whole process without ever seeing either of my advisors again. Nothing says "screw your advice" like an acceptance letter.

Don't let a bad MCAT get you down. Take it again. And again if you have to. Keep your head up, you can do it.

Ya, keep your head up. You've set a goal for your self and that's the first step to realizing it. I was told that I had little to no chance with a 3.2 overall, and I'm starting in a few weeks. Your MCAT is a set back, but only a set back. It is in no way an end, only a bump in the long road. Keep at it and study hard for the retake!!

think of your first mcat as a buffer for improvement. hehehehe for instance, let us say you score a modest 25 next time. it will most likely be an improvement in all sections. admissions will be like, "this student really improved..super, we'll accept her!"
however, if your first score was around a 23-25 they might say, "hmmm...I think there is more potential here, let's reject this time."

I am just making all of this up...I don't know. But it sounds good! 😀

To clarify: when I said pad the school's numbers, I'm talking about the undergrad's numbers for percent of students applying getting accepted to med school. Several advisors are known to tell their own students not to apply so they can market (read: "*****") themselves to prospective students by saying "95% of our students who apply get into med school..."

My undergrad did a really good job of keeping the people with low gpa's from applying. When I met with the pre-med advisor from my department, I was told: "Well... your borderline for getting in, but we'll support you anyway." And you're right boomer; I remember the whoring when I went to visit my undergrad college for the first time.
95% acceptace(disclaimer: 95% acceptance offer valid only for a limited few)

Why would you ever listen to someone's advice about the MCAT and med school application process who has never taken the MCAT nor applied to med school?

That is stupid in and of itself.

I had a 20M and I improved to a 26O the second time around so you can do it! 😀

If you have to, go around him and get LORs from instructors who will write a good LOR for you. You don't need a premed committee letter, although they like it.

There are some DO schools that would take you.

I wouldn't apply to MD unless your "underrepresented" in our population, at least with your current stats. good luck
