I'll be living off campus. As a returning college student who is definitely much older and having already experienced the dorm life, it is not for me. I lived in dorms many years ago as an undergrad and also was a Resident Assistant for both dorms and apartments. My only issue with dorms and campus housing is the lack of maturity that goes around. Good luck with fellow students respecting quiet hours and we will need it as most of us will have a schedule of classes that are science heavy. Not sure about the meal plans, some schools require you live on campus to qualify for the meal plan, other schools do not. Luckily for me, I'm actually a decent cook and enjoys preparing my own meals.
 
I applied on May 21 for the program. I called and talked to one of the coordinators, and she said that enrollment this year is more competitive because there are a lot of applicants this year. I come from a non-science background. What are my chances to get in? (Did I apply too late to get accepted?)

If you don't mind sharing a little more information about yourself? GPA, undergrad major etc. If you have good numbers and the deadline hasn't arrived yet, then you should have a good chance. If you don't get in, apply for the same program at SFSU for the Spring Semester and get a jump start on that as early as possible.

I won't start studying for the MCAT until my 2nd year in the program. I'm doing the career changer track so I would need to strenghten the areas of Bio/chem etc. before I start studying for it. If I were to estimate when I would start studying for it, probably sometime during the summer of 2013 and will take the test by the end of 2013.

I have been tossing this question around in my mind for quite some time. Based on the many comments on SDN, it's just not ideal to study for the MCAT while in school. I can't really see how someone can be a full-time student and study for the MCAT 8+ hours per day (if you are trying to study for it in 3-ish months, which is the time frame that the SN2ed plan recommends). I've been thinking about starting with a prep class next summer, and seeing where that gets me. I would prefer to take The Berkeley Review over Kaplan (even with the discount given for CSUEB post-bac students) or Princeton Review, but I still have to do more research on this. For me, just planning to start studying comes with some stress =\

Yes I can relate when it comes to the stress. Which is why I try not to worry about it at the moment. For me, I just need to make sure I do really well in all of my classes first, then go from there. You are correct that studying for MCAT and taking a full load of classes is going to be difficult, but not impossible. I think what I'll do when the time comes is probably take a lighter load for one quarter when I begin studying for it and designate a schedule that includes studying for it. As for which studying guides to use, I've used Kaplan in the past for other tests and they tend to be really good. However, I may look into private tutoring from those 'so-called' genius instructors.
 
I applied back in Jan, but mycsueb still says initiated... I've sent in my official transcripts in the beginning of Feb. and again in Mar. I've also tried calling the admissions office but they keep telling me that they have either not received the transcripts or not processed it. I've also called the phap office, and they've taken down my info twice and said they would contact me after looking into my app, since it has been almost 5 months... that was 2-3 weeks ago 🙁 Anyone else having a hard time with their application getting through??

5 months seems a little bit longer than usual, what exactly did admissions say when you called in? See if you can contact Dr. Oscar Wambuguh the director of the program via email [email protected] or give him a call at (510)885-2366. He might direct you back to admissions but tell him all the information you posted here. I'm sure there is some kind of selection committee that works with admissions to decide who gets accepted but it normally doesn't take even with thousand of applicants. Hope that helps.

Hey Mika,

Unfortunately I'm not an adcom person so I wouldn't be able to give you most accurate answer. It also depends if you're applying for the academic enhancer or career changer track so the answer might be a little different between those. However, based on those numbers you have a decent chance of getting accepted into the program at CSU East Bay. Their program has a minimum requirement that is solely based on GPA and from what I've heard most students who apply that meet the requirement tend to get accepted. The only issue I see here is that because it is numbers based they tend to fall in the "first come, first served" category. That is if you applied to the program much later it starts to work against you only because this is when a majority of applications come in. I don't know the exact number of students who get selected into the program each quarter but if they received thousands of applications with a very limited amount of spots available they will become very selective at that point. Plus application for career changers are only accepted for the Fall quarter of each academic year.

It's a catch 22 situation. I'm not sure how adcoms think but in this situation they tend to favor the student with the higher GPA. The problem I personally have with this is that students who apply for programs like this usually have lower GPAs to begin with and the program is suppose to be designed to assist these type of students. Students with much higher GPAs in the 3.2+ range have more flexibility and don't always have to go with a post-bacc program unless they are non-science majors. Even then some could already apply for a Special Master's Program that are designed specifically for pre-med students and have a higher chance of getting into Medical School that way. Those who were Science majors could be put in the academic enhancer track which has a rolling admission process so they can always apply during each quarter.

SFSU post bacc has been around a little big longer and has a more thorough application process which will need 2 letters of recommendations and answer a fairly good amount of questions in the application process. There isn't just 'one' statement of purpose but multiple questions that will require some thought to answer. As a result they are very selective, despite having the same minimum GPA requirement as CSU East Bay. This makes it more difficult to get into the program and if anyone is applying late to their program, I would recommend waiting for the following semester because they do have a limited rolling admission process. Also, this is just my opinion so when I say this please take it with a grain of salt or more 🙂 that is if you have a cumulative GPA below 3.0 don't bother applying to the SFSU program until you're able to reach that number through community college or open university programs.

Like stated prior, not an adcom person but this is a straight forward answer as I can think of. The only advice I have is, in the future please try to apply much earlier. Also don't be discouraged at all if you don't get in this time around and just keep pegging away. Remember that the path towards medical school is not a race and that everyone has their own individual pace they go on to reach it. That's what makes us unique. Hope this helps.

Just submitted my intent to enroll for the CC track this fall. Going to head North and look for housing soon, does anyone know of some good spots for students off campus/is anyone looking for a roommate?

Also, I read on the third page of this thread that enrollment in classes starts June 11th? I talked to someone yesterday cause I was missing the student info link too and they said that I had a scheduled enrollment date for today. Seems like they may have been mistaken, especially considering the enrolled stats for the PHAP classes haven't changed...:laugh:

Has anyone been able to signup for classes yet?

Hey Ben,

I was informed from the Office of the Registrar that we will not be allowed to register for classes until beginning June 11th. No, I have not been able to sign up for any classes yet because the website has not been updated to allow me to register for classes when I login. LOL, yes that seems to be the consensus issue with everyone at the moment. Yes, I'll be looking for a place to stay and will need roommates.

According to the website it gave a date of May 1st. I think this is a general date for all students who are admitted to begin during Fall of 2012.

Since the PHAP is a little different and you have just been accepted recently you can submit your intent to register at a later time. However, a couple of things to keep in mind. There is a potential registration date for students who have already been committed to the program that begins on June 11. This could be different for AE track vs CC track. Even after you submit your intent to register, there is more paperwork and forms (FAFSA) to be submitted either online or faxed/mailed etc. so it will take time to process after you submit your SIR until you are officially ready to register. Thanks for the response, that's good to hear. Also, I'm gonna be chatting up a friend who went to school in the area and is still around to get some hints on housing and whatnot. I'm over dorm life from my undergrad and don't plan on revisiting it.

Also, to Member 8888, I submitted my SIR last week so I'm pretty sure the May 1st deadline isn't strictly enforced if that even is the deadline for the PHAP.

I have been told via email by PHAP that the last day to submit your intent to register is July 31.

As for the SFSU post-bac program, I would recommend applying on the very first day that the application opens for the cycle you want to start. Also, I recommend spending some quality time perfecting their required essays to convince them that you will do well in the program. Even though they list minimum requirements, I'm pretty sure you have to compete against students who already have 3.5+'s and are trying to get into MD/pharm/dental school etc. I agree with Cliff in that it's just not fair because the point of a post-bac program is to boost your GPA and/or take all the pre-req's, and people like this need more help than people who have higher GPAs and who could just take a few classes through Open University. Unfortunately I don't think the program completely follow this philosophy, as they told me I wasn't accepted due to my GPA and "needing more science and math courses" (I was a bio major...not sure how many more I could've taken...). Sorry I guess I'm just a little bitter against SFSU, but I don't want to bash it because I know it's a great program. But CSU East Bay seems to be a great program too 🙂

It is absolutely okay to be bitter at SFSU. In fact about 2 months ago I was also in your shoes when I received my rejection email from SFSU. I put a lot of effert into that application, taking my time to write very strong responses to all of the questions that really came from the heart. Even went above and beyond to provide 3 letters of recommendations that came from both professors and supervisors. What's worse was that I even met the Director and some of his fellow staff members from SFSU at a conference I attended earlier this year. They were really nice people and they actually really encouraged me to apply to their post bacc program. So I felt really good about applying for their program. At the time I was already accepted to CSU East Bay so I figured it was worth a shot since I'll have options. Of course now that I didn't get into SFSU, I'm wondering now if it was even worth the effort to do all that when I kind of knew then they were looking for the elite students.

Now, I'm even more excited about CSU East Bay because I actually like the Quarter system better. I get more classes done faster as oppose to going from one semester to the next. SFSU program begins during this summer which would not have worked for me because I landed an internship this summer. I work at the local county hospital where I not only get paid but also gain solid work experience. We all know that SFSU has a great program but I think CSU East Bay is just as good, we're just a newer program. I'm reminded that every program is only as good as what you put into it and that 95% of the effort has to come from the student where the other 5% could be whatever the school has to offer. Doing great in this program will still take you wherever you want to go. So my goal is to do great and also put CSU East Bay on the map as a solid post bacc program. 🙂

Luckly I had other options and I am happy about how things worked out.

Now I am trying to understand this Financial Aid stuff. I have never done this before so I am a little confused. In my "to do list" on MyCSUEB they want me to fill out this student agreement file and they are asking how many units will I be taking each quarter. Should I wait until after I make my schedule for the fall or should I just fill it out now? I am on the Academic Enhance track and I looked at email that was sent to me and it told me what classes I should sign up for fall 2012 (13 Units in all).

I'm not sure about Winter or Spring yet though.

I think you can submit the information now or anytime before school starts. However, the sooner probably the better so that financial aid has the information in the system. That way there won't be any delays when they need to alocate funds. I don't think you have to know exactly the amount of units you plan on taking in the Fall or any of the following quarters. What they really want to know is whether you plan on attending full time or part time so more than 12 they'll classify as full time and under 12, it would be considered part time. The amount of money you receive is different based on full time or part time status.

So Eastbay has all my transcripts, and they said they're now doing a final review of my application. From that point on, how long does it take, roughly, before they come back with an answer? Because my partial transcripts have been in for a while...and how do they notify you? Email? Thanks all. =D

Edit: I got in for fall 2012!!! Do I get an email or something? I'm...not entirely sure what to do from here...and I turned in a FAFSA...but I don't have finanical aid? Does that only appear when I accept?

Congratulation! No, you don't get an email. You just check back on my.csueastbay.edu website to see if there are any updates. Once you submit your intent to register which is also done through the website, more information will be available to submit more forms and documents. Financial Aid won't be distributed until Fall Quarter begins. Just regularly check back on the website for more information.

But speaking of financial aid, Mika252, has anybody been able to accept it yet I've tried? I clicked on the "Accept/Decline Awards" button on the Award Summary page, but it won't even check the accept boxes for me, so I'm confused.😕
 
It's a relief because I've A. Given up on waiting for an interview from the UCs. B. Though I haven't turned in my intent to register since I'm waiting on SF, I'm leaning towards East Bay due to cost. I can commute from home. ^^; C. I'm been in limbo on where I'm going for so long that I felt like I could breathe when I saw the news.

Edit: I do have a question though, for classes, do we only pick after we turn in our intent to register? I'm assuming so, otherwise it wouldn't make sense. xD And only after they get our final transcript? And how...do we even pick classes? The search doesn't really work for me. x_x

You're welcome 🙂 as for the financial aid situation, I'm going to check with the IT department because it appears to be a java script error on the webpage that is causing that. I've tested google's chrome, firefox and internet explorer and none of the browser allow to click accept/decline boxes. However, this could also be related to registration and perhaps all of that will start working once we're able to register for classes. So please stay tuned.

Once you've submitted your intent to register and when all documents/transcripts are in, you will be able to register for classes. How do you register for classes? When you login to my.csueastbay.edu there will be a new section for "students" in the top left corner next to "applicant" tab, more options will become available under the student tab which will allow you to register for classes.

I registered for classes today! So if anyone else was given a registration date of Monday 6/11/12, you should be able to register today. I'm in the CC track so I registered for basic science classes. Also perhaps someone can help answer this question for me, what does "seminar is optional" mean? Is that different from Lecture? I don't see any listings for seminar but all these science courses have a lecture that is tied to a specific lab time. Also if anyone needs the list of classes to register for that was sent from Dr. W, in case you didn't get the email in your horizon account, please send me a PM.
 
Today is my registration date but I am really confused. All the classes I am suppose to sign up for do not show up when I look them up. For example, General Biochemistry and Epidemiology. I am on the academic enhancer track. Am I doing something wrong?
 
For the Academic Enhancer track, Seminar is its own class and is only 1 unit. There is no lab.

When you login to mycsueastbay and click to on student center, click on the enroll link which is the second link under academics (ignore all these steps if you already know this 🙂)

You have two options to add a class:

If you already know the 4 digits for the specific class enter the 4 digits into the box and click enter. This will show the class information and if it comes with a lab will confirm the lab times and then you can click on proceed to add the class.

The other option is to do a search which is a little longer process because you will have to go through the specifc subject to search through them. Also it is a little more complicated when you choose course career as 'postbacc' or 'undergraduate' so I would still recommend at least knowing what the course section is because the postbacc cohort has a different section as oppose to regular students. Our classes are guaranteed for us as oppose to other students. Here's an example of what to look for:

CHEM4411 - General Biochemistry (4 Units)
09SS 2873 SSD LEC 30/30 MW Hayward Campus 12:00P-01:50P Staff

Know the colors:
Course Section
Course Number

I feel like a college freshman for asking all these questions. -.-" But I see there are two campuses, Concord and Hayward. Is there a case where one campus gets full and you have to take classes at another campus? Because I'd like to stay on Hayward campus. ^^;

Just enroll your classes early lol

I guess it is possible, but it should be rare and for most of cases, people generally end up with leftover sections ...aka you can't choose your professor 🙁

I am just guessing and applying common sense ...

You're welcome. Yeah it is confusing, they have a search tab and an enroll tab, if you go through the search tab it looks exactly the same as if you go through the search inside the enroll tab. However, you can't register for classes through the search tab, only through the enroll tab. It can defiintely be confusing.

Two different campuses but the Hayward campus is more of the actual university campus with the bulk of all class types, where as Concord is more an extension type location if certain people prefer that location more.

great...CHEM 4411 - General Biochemistry is full and I still can't register for class

and the HOLD of official transcript is killing me since my school won't put on graduation date till late July/Mid Aug (I already submitted and they got it)

How to resolve this problem? Anyone have/had similar situation?

Yes, I tried to register for classes on Monday and it gave me a HOLD which I didn't know about. Later I realized it explains what you're missing for transcripts in your student to-do list. I called the records office and they were waiting for a school in which I attended but withdrew from. Apparently I have to wait until my final transcript is sent before I can register. Hope I can still get into the classes I need 🙁

Is there a chance you can talk to the office in person? I think a friend of mine did that to make sure all transcripts were in .
 
Is anybody looking for a roommate?? i have a spot on hold at the dorms, but i dont really want to stay in the dorms the fact that it is really expensive. I'm in the academic enhancer track

yeah it went in, but it just doesn't have my graduation date or degree-post date. The type of transcript with graduation date or degree-post date won't able for us till the 10th week after we graduated.... :'(

Hmmm...that's a toughie. I take it you explained your situation over and over again and there's nothing they can do? What you could do is, maybe if the section you want is full, go to it anyway and see if anyone is willing to switch sections with you. That's how we did it at Cal for those that needed certain sections. I'm sorry about your situation, that sucks. >.<

I'll have to have the last class scrapings since I applied late and my official transcripts aren't there yet...apparently.
