CSU Monterrey Bay

My younger brother is a high school senior. He is thinking about playing college soccer and has two schools that he could likely play for; Cal Poly, SLO or CSU Monterrey Bay. I just finished my BS at Cal Poly so I know its a great school, but I know nothing about CSU Monterrey Bay. He has already been accepted at CSU MB, but would rather go to Cal Poly for soccer because there team is better. I just wanted to know if anyone on here knew anything about CSU MB? Campus? Social life? Academics?

This is a medical related, not soccer related forum, since from your post your brother isn't at all interested in medicine, this probably isn't the best place to ask this question.

That said, I'll try to answer as best I can. I don't know much about CSUM, however everyone I know who has gone to Cal Poly seems to rave about it, and it definitely has a stronger academic reputation that CSUM. Personally I'd encourage your brother to go with Cal Poly.

Haha Come on The duck, I know this is a Medical forum not a soccer forum. I didn't ask anything about where he should play soccer. I asked for insight on the school of CSU MB. I know Cal Poly is better I just haven't heard anything about CSU MB and thought I would see if anyone on here might have

I live less than 10 miles from CSUMB, and am a local high school senior, and I can tell you that it doesn't have the best reputation. It is one of the newest CSU's, and has smaller class sizes. Like all colleges, it is place to get an education, however it is in the lower tier of California Colleges. Personally, I wouldn't attend CSUMB.

Lol, one more thing: Monterey. It isn't that hard.

Yes, because this is the bay area. If you are planning to get an undergrad in marine science, CSUMB is the place to go. Then one could continue their graduate work at UCSC.

Depends on the community college. Some CCs are better than others. You probably know more about this than I do, since you are currently attending a CSU, but I heard that CSU/UC to CSU/UC transfer is hard. If he doesn't get into the CSU/UC he wants to go to, maybe he can attend a CC and then transfer through a guaranteed acceptance agreement. Some CCs have agreements with UCs/CSUs that say keep X GPA, and take X classes, and you will be accepted for sure. That's what I would do.

Thanks for your replies guys. Yeah I don't know what to advice my brother. I went to a CC then a CSU and now I am starting dental school in the fall at a UC, but I also know that its easy for some people to get stuck at a CC for a lot longer than they should because most people don't have the drive at a CC. So I would kind of want him to to go a CSU even if its CSU MB because at least most people there will get their Bachelor's Degree. Or do you know by any chance if CSU MB has a high drop out rate?

• Transfer Out Rate: 51%
• 4-Year Graduation Rate: 11%
• 6-Year Graduation Rate: 39%

Looking at the retention and graduation rates, CSUMB is well below CSU's system-wide average. With that said, I'm sure that any CSU will have much higher retention rates than most CCs. Tell him to visit the campus, he may change his mind really quickly. There is a good reason why most of the attendees are locals.

Wow. Only 39% of people graduate in 6 years? That really horrible. I would never go to a school where 51% of kids transfer, and the majority don't graduate...

The college is only about 15 years old, really 10 until they had all their programs going full tilt. Something to tell your brother, if he enjoys mountain biking, he'll love this campus, great hills in the nearby area. The school is built on an old amry training base, Fort Ord. In fact, some of the buildings that don't have asbestos are actually used as classrooms. The campus itself is really small, and is surrounded by unexploded ordinance. The firefighters in the area are frequently doing controlled burns to clear up the land the army left scattered with mines.

Lol! Those areas are quarantined off. Ford Ord is now going through housing development, and the land without mines is great for cross country running and mountain biking. Like I said, I would never go to CSUMB, however, I don't want to rip on the school either.
