Hey, does it matter whether you go to a CSU(CSUN) or a UC(UCI) school for undergrad in order to get into dental school?? Because I just transfered to UCI and I am almost done with my 3rd quarter here... it's kind of hard for me to adjust to the giant 600 person classes and my grades are suffering, I pretty much have straight C's (for Ochem's and the bio's like genetics and biochem.) .. now I'm thinking if I should just go to a local CSU like CSUN and retake the classes, where I kno I can do much better in. What do you guys think??? PLEASE any suggestions would help.

switch to csu if you want.

it does not matter at all to almost all schools whether u came from a uc or csu, ived talked to over 8 counselors over the phone about this and feel very strongly against this fact becasue i am from ucla myself and am sure csu students did not have to work as hard to get the same gpa.

I would be careful in thinking your gpa will just dramatically improve at CSUN in particular. I attend CSUN and while many of the non science classes are not very difficult, the chemistry courses in particular are more difficult than you might think. Not to say you cannot do well, but that you shouldn't just think you will without effort. Good luck with your decision, it would be nice to have another predent at CSUN (seems like there are like 5).

Yeah. I went to a CSU and I definitely didn't have to work as hard as you to get the same grades. Course, maybe I could be a more organized student, better notetaker, better memorizer, better studier, more inclined to the understanding the content of the classes I took, or just plain smarter than you...oh no wait...what am I saying. How could I even think such things are possible. You went to UCLA, so by default you're smarter and better than me in academics.

Sorry to troll, but I'm tired of this accusation, flippantly made or not.

Hi!
Dont be scared!Dont let 600 competitive students scared you. In my opinion, you should not transfer to CSU, dental school committee will take that you cannot survive in UC then how can you survive in dental school. Remember, dental school is 10 times harder than any UC or elite school.
just my 2 cents thought

What evidence do you have of dental schools having that perception if he transfers? How do you know they will take it that way? Are you an adcom? Didn't think so. I think that is a *****ic thing to write.

Did you read my whole passage? I don't have any evidence and "as in my opinion... just my 2 cents though"
He wants people's opinion not evidence

Sorry Bruin, didn't look at your post close enough. My guess is he wants more than just opinion though?

I say that as long as you're learning the material and know it, it doesn't matter where you go. If you've accomplished that much already, you will adjust as need be to the rigors of dental school.

to admissions, the school you go to doesn't matter.

but i kinda agree with the other bruin.... ucla and csu gpas of the similar magnitudes are not the same... 😉

I don't think the adcoms will look down on you if you decide to transfer to a CSU, especially if it would be a better fit for you. Part of getting good grades comes down to how much you enjoy the classes. UCs tend to teach on a more theoretical basis whereas CSU have a reputation for being more practical. I didn't attend a CSU, so I can't really say for sure, but the friends or classmates that did tend to feel the classes carried more context. That being said, I went to Berkeley and felt I was overprepared science-wise for dental school. The concepts we have to learn are pretty simple to the stuff I had to tackle as an undergrad, so it made academics much easier for me now. The main difficulty in dental school is not the difficulty of individual concepts, it just that the workload is about 3 times higher. Do what you think will make you happy and don't have any regrets. Undergrad's a fun time, make sure you live it up.👍

just keep telling yourself that.
Sorry to revive an old post. but for others I just want to say that the magnitude of the courses at a CSU and UC may be the same in terms of the material, competitiveness is another factor. ucla peers are definitely more devilish and you will have to find different ways to be on top of your class.

science is science it can't get more complicated than that, knowing your material is just one part.

That's messed up, i work pretty hard for my grades and I go to a CSU
