CSULA Post Bacc

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am! Hoping I can get in with a 3.1 GPA from a UC...

A fellow applicant! I know what u mean. I called them up and they said they are expecting to admit 20 students, which is double their previous times.

Hey LastPolarBear, was it Pat Quan that told you they were admitting 20 applicants?

Do they have info on participants and which med schools they get accepted in on their website?

From what I hear, they do not keep track of which students go into medical school from the program. They said they do know that in general 43% of students applying from Cal state LA get accepted to medical school every year.

Also, have any of you that applied heard back yet?

I applied awhile back, have you guys checked your status on their website? Mine still says incomplete but when I called they said everything was in, it's so annoying!

I got an email saying your decision will be made 3 weeks from this date but I didn't know if that was getting into CSULA or specifically the post-bac.

I'm very confused. 🙁

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. When I talked to Pat a few days before the app due date, she said my app was complete. However, on their website my app status also says incomplete.

Edit:

Ok, so I just got off the phone with Pat. I think we're good, even if our admissions status online says incomplete. We have to go through two admissions screenings, one through CSULA admissions and one through the post bacc program. The CSULA admissions just requires a 2.5 gpa minimum; get that and you're automatically in. The post bacc program still has to make a decision though, which will be done by the end of this month.

Ohhh I see. That makes sense. Do you guys know how much this program costs? (I know I probably should have checked that before I applied). I feel like even if I get in I might not go through with it IF it costs too much, I think UCLA extension might just do it for me lol.

Thanks for the info!

I think it's fairly cheap compared to the other programs, especially if you're an in state resident. Unless I'm mistaken, tuition is about 1800 a quarter.

I thought we were supposed to know my the end of May...but I haven't heard anything.

I was told they hope to let students know by mid june, but it may be late june.

Might be jumping the gun here, but did anyone hear back yet?

They let me know I got in last Wednesday (June 2nd) and I confirmed my spot about an hour ago..

They called me..but I think I'm a different case because I applied to the regular post-bacc and the PPOHA/Expanding Opportunities program, so maybe they call us separately

What is the PPOHA/Expanding Opportunities program?

And, How does CSULA Postbacc compare to the Postbaccs at CSU Northridge, Fullerto and San Francisco State?

The PPOHA is for URM's I believe.

As for the different CSU's, here's what I think/heard of them:

CSUN: No post bacc as far as I know. The budget cuts got them.

Fullerton: From the website, it looks pretty good, but unlike CSULA, this place is only for people who are career changers and are looking to take the pre med requirements.

SFSU: I like this program, it's probably the best one out of the CSU's. It looks like they've got their stuff in order. They have a pretty good reputation and have tracks for both career changers and academic enhancers. The only problem with SFSU is that it's something around 24k for two years. I believe CSULA is around 5k a year.

Thanks for the info. So the CSULA program is a year then?

Yeah, I think it's a year, but maybe it's possible to take more than one if needed.

Just found out I didn't get into the program. It's a shame because I really wanted to go to this place too. I need a post bacc to raise my gpa. I applied to East Bay, but that's not complete yet. I guess for me I still have a chance for East Bay or else it's ucla extension.

Did you call them, or did they call you? I'm still waiting to find out whether I got in or not.

I withdrew my app from CSULA last week. I was technically incomplete since they needed my spring grades, but I decided not to send them and stick with UCLA extension.

Let's hope I made the right decision! :luck:

I called. You should have received an email today. But then again, I was denied. Maybe they give snail mail only to those that got in.

I might be joining you next year at ucla extension. How do you sign up for classes though? Is it a difficult process?

I signed up through their website, it's soo easy! You don't even need to register and "get in" you seriously just enter the class you want, pay, and you get a confirmation. I've heard you can get financial aid, but I'm not too sure about this. I think you have to submit the forms way earlier than the qtr you plan to attend.

Honestly with CSULA it came down to $ and their price was more than I could handle per qtr which is why I withdrew my app.

Here's the website- https://www.uclaextension.edu/fos/default.aspx

Just go to "Science and Math" and you can see what's offered for this summer, Fall is not up yet though I think that will be available in mid-July.
When you register you just go to 'Quick Enroll' at the top right of the page and proceed with the checkout. Super easy and fast, I love it!

Anyway, if you have any questions about enrolling just let me know, I haven't taken classes there yet, but summer classes will start next week! I think some classes are still open if you want to take summer.

Thanks for the info. I just browsed through their courses, looks good. I plan on registering for autumn, so I hope there will be a good selection when autumn comes. How long do you plan on taking extension classes?

Yeah me too! I'm sure they will have some good options.

I plan on taking classes until I get an acceptance letter 🙂 My gpa is the biggest flag on my app at the moment so I'm hoping with DO schools and their grade replacement policy I can bring it up to a competitive range.

I'm taking my chances applying this cycle though, so we'll see how it goes!

For those who might have gone thru this program, how was the mcat prep....in terms of intensivity, rigor, schedule, can one work @ same time...thanks

do you guys know which financial aids you are eligible for in this program?

Hello!!!

Anyone apply for CSULA post bac and has heard back???
