Hello to all, I am starting this thread so that those who have applied to CSULA Postbacc 2011 program will have a place to discuss their application process. Good luck to all!

I submitted back in mid April but I have not heard anything from them. I have gotten my CIN and GET but there is nothing on their website to check my status.

wow, finally someone started the thread thanks again...i'd like to know if the CSULA post bac program is a formal/structured program, I read on the ammc post bac list that it was an individualized/unstructured program, can someone clarify that. thanks. where else can one see stats or info about this program, cos like kb1204 said, the website doesnt say much. thanks again

They said they will notify everyone towards the end of June. Good luck! 🙂

Hello guys,

Here is some information that might help answer a few questions
Certificate programs are designed to augment University curricula by providing specialized instruction and training within a field. These programs usually require significantly fewer units than a degree. A postbaccalaureate certificate program must contain a minimum of 16 units. Normally, courses in certificate programs will be upper division or graduate level, except for prerequisites. Students may transfer from another institution no more than one quarter of the total units required for a certificate (75% of the course work must be completed at Cal State L.A.). A maximum of one quarter (25%) of the total units required for a certificate may be devoted to internships or independent study, or a combination of both. The minimum grade point average required for completion of a postbaccalaureate certificate program is B (3.0). These grade point average requirements do not pertain to noncredit certificate programs. A Certificate of Completion is awarded upon successful completion of the program requirements. Some certificates are offered within degree majors and can be applied toward a baccalaureate or a master’s degree; others are offered through the College of Extended Studies and International Programs with the certificate being the main goal.
Cal State L.A. offers credit certificate programs at both undergraduate and postbaccalaureate levels. Listed below are postbaccalaureate certificate programs. Individual program and course requirements appear in academic department and division listings in the chapters that follow.
Postbaccalaureate certificate programs require a completed bachelor’s degree for entry into the program.

Hello again,

I have received my CIN & Username as well, my application status currently has a green circle next to it (which indicates that my application is complete). I will keep you guys posted should anything change (i.e., they request further documentation).

*The program is a very very good choice for individuals seeking to attend medical school. I have a medical school mentor who is in his 5th year MD/MBA program and he stated that UCLA and USC accept a great number of pre-meds from CSULA Post-bacc.

-Take care guys 🙂

I have gotten my CIN and GET as well. where do you check your application status?

They will email you. I have gotten it about 1 month after I submitted my application.

Hello guys,

So I this is how I checked my current admission application. This might only be the general application to CSULA but it is good to know this process nonetheless.

Step 1: Login into GET
Step 2: Select Self Service
Step 3: Select Student Center
Step 4: Scroll down to view your application status

-Later guys

I submitted everything including my transcripts a while back, but now my STATUS says that it's "Incomplete".. hmm... any ideas?

and it says that the school is waiting to hear back from the post bacc program for admission.

oh btw, patt quan said my application was complete though.

ahhh! i'm nervous too! my status says complete and emailed Quann yesterday and she said "your application is complete, we'll notify you in june". I really need this program because nothing else as worked so far and i'm a re applicant too. 🙁

Again, does anyone know if there is an MCAT prep incorporated into this program? thanks.

Man this waiting game is the worst, i haven't received any word but hopefully within the next week an announcement will be made.

I know, I hope it's gonna be in a week, waiting till the end of June will not be ideal for those who may seek alternative plans. I'm just still curious about whether an mcat prep included in the program

The program is designed to make post-baccalaureate students more competitive for admission through a combination of coursework, standardized test preparation, and health science activities.

Looks like they do have mcat prep.

Not yet....I will call them today, and post whatever they say, I don't like the fact that it's taking too long....rili

Hello Everyone,

I just received a call from one of the admission board members informing me that I have been accepted into the program, Woot Woot. I am sure that they will be calling those who have been accepted for the next few days. If you guys have any questions let me know. Take care.

Hey santose, congrats on your acceptance....I was accepted this morning woot woot.....I might be coming down there this summer for the mcat prep. Do you know more about this program you might Wana share, I can't see so much on their website, in terms of acceptance rate into med school etc.

i've been reading some posts from people who were accepted to the program before and it seems like it was tough to get into classes and there weren't that many classes offered! i hope it's not like that this time around...

It can't be worse than an informal. I did extension at ucla uci and csup. Every school has the same system. You have to go on the first day and see if there is a spot open. If there is a waiting list, you have no chance. Basically you have no priority since you are not officially a student of the campus. So honestly, any formal program gives you the advantage of a registration window and financial aid is better than none. Trust me it is really rough. I had to go to different campuses every day and sometimes went to six classes hoping someone would drop by the last drop date. It's rough but doable. Just be prepared. It was a shock to me because I had no idea how difficult it would be to get classes. And honestly you only end up with the hardest professors since those are the only ones that have space. Also be careful with ucla. Not all of tho bio departments take extension due to budget cuts. I believe it was the cell bio department but micro bio was still taking students. Good luck everyone!

mind showing me the link saying that?
and damn I have a miss call , unavailable one around the time they got accepted, so I'm hoping thats an acceptance call. I tried to reach out Mr. Alex but no luck (he never return my phone calls 🙁).

Which UCLA extension courses did you take?
and yes formal postbac is way better than informal. All that pain I had to go through just to get into CC classes.... stupid budget cut....

it was in one of the older SDN forums... i doubt i can find it again. call came from a 323 number.

Niccccccce!! You got a miss call!! If it was from 323 you def got in. Congrats! I took molecular parasitology

I called. In the next 2~3 days they will finish announcing...

Yeah I called too. He said he will finish the acceptances by today-tomorrow. And it's not rolling basis

Kind of weird. I called again and they said all the decisions have been made. So it seems that it's just sending the information to the university. So I think they already contacted those who got in. It's just sending in all the information to the university now. Because Alex said it is the university and not him that will be contacting us. I think he meant "us" as in those who did not get in. Unless the people who got a phone call can verify if they got a call from Alex/pat instead of the university. Fingers crossed. Btw avoid Alex. He just sounds stress but pat is always super nice if any o you guys were going to call.

bummer.....

those people that got accepted, what are your stats? and test scores?

My stat was
My humble stats
Cgpa 3.1
Sci gpa 2.99

Graduated from UC Davis, bio science major
About 240 hours of shadowing and volunteering at UCD medical center
1 year as wellness intern at student clinic, approx 150 hours
recently immigrated to US from Africa, and i applied as URM.
Worked for 2 years as undergrad as a research aide in a plant lab/ greenhouse
Never taken MCAT.

That's everything medically significant in my stats, every other things was probably community service,

Good luck to everyone, and don't give up your dreams of becoming physicians, I applied last but didn't get in, so I applied again....@ Laughing gas, I wish you the best!

do you guys know which financial aids you are eligible for in this program?

who will be joing the MCAT class in LA this friday?

I will not be. Hey DonChissy, what classes are you planning on signing up for? Are you going to take 3 "required" classes? Isn't taking 3 upper div science classes a bit much?

@ Dchoi, No taking 3 sci upper courses is actually not too bad, although it gets worse when those 3 come with labs....but to help with this question, when we get into med school, i was told that the curriculum is like having full time undergrad schedule with a part-time job, and other acvitivities, so we might start getting used to it now..haha..I plan to take neurobiology: neurophysiology, gene manipulation and i think neurobio development for the fall..wat about you?

hmm... i guess you are right. i plan on taking biochem, toxicology, and biometrics. hopefully we can get into the classes we want... as for financial aid stuff, what have you done so far? I just turned in the "Post-Bacc Status" form today and paid for the enrollment confirmation... anything else we need to do?

Does anyone know if we can fax in the financial aid form?

And how many classes is everyone taking? I signed up for 4 upper div science classes...don't know if thats too much...

Alex Martinez doesn't respond to my emails/phonecalls....

Where do we find information about the MCAT course we are required to take? Any does anyone have information about possible research opportunities on campus?

As for financial aid, I thought they didn't have financial aid for graduate students anymore, but I could be wrong, I had to pay using a loan from the Bank of Mom and Dad.

did anybody actually get the classes they wanted? this is really ridiculous.

I don't know your exact situation, but I am satisfied with my class schedule for this Fall. When was your enrollment window?

You can only get financial aid if you completed your fafsa by march 2. If you did that you can get a grant, a small one. Otherwis, only 12,500 for the entire year. You must submit a form to financial aide, and everything takes forever to be processed. Plus you will get the stipend if you are part of the expanding opportunities. Class selection is not bad at all. They will give you permits to get classes before anyone else does. Michael Chen will always let people in if there is even the slightest room. Almost any class you can get in if it is not a lab, and even then you can still get in if you bring your lab top and upload the cd. I don't know why anyone would complain about classes, its pointless. If anyone needs any advice let me know.

which financial aid form?

http://www.calstatela.edu/univ/finaid/forms/forms.php

Certification of Graduate or Post-Baccalaureate Student Status form, this should have been done as soon as you got the call that you were accepted, and turned in. You cannot fax it because you have to get multiple signatures on it.

Expanding opportunities students take the Princeton Review condensed class. Five hours of class followed by studying the rest of the night before bed. Then a month of independent study before taking the exam. They want everyone to take the exam in September.

4 upper division science classes is the norm. 5 if you're motivated. 3 for non-traditional students who haven't been in school for awhile.

There are research opportunities. You have to seek out the professors yourselves. Contact bio department and chem department for leads. Talk to the chair of the bio department or the chair of the biochemistry department if that is something you want to do/have time for. The USC volunteer shadow is cool too, but apply now, for the application process takes awhile. Again, only do this stuff if you have time. Classes come first. You need the grades to get you in the door.

thanks for the info! yeah, i got all the financial aid stuff taken care of and signed up for all the classes I wanted.

Who do we contact to know more about this program? I'm thinking of doing part-time but not sure if it's allowed...
