CSULA Postbacc 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does anyone know if csula offers biochemistry as a night course?

Bump! unless there's a CSULA 2012 thread?

Yeah, I'm not sure why not many people have talked about the CSULA post-bac program for 2012. The deadline of May 15th is quickly approaching. Maybe they're waiting to see if they get accepted?

It would be helpful to hear from people currently in the program to get their opinions on it. I don't know much about it besides what is on their website and from posts on SDN from 2011. My biggest concern is if classes will be difficult to get into...this will be a major deciding factor in where I do a formal program. It's been too stressful and exhausting trying to go through the open university process without any guarantee of getting into classes.

I am still waiting to hear back from CSULA, but from the looks of this thread it might not be until late June.

Mailed in my supplemental application package. Still waiting for it to be complete on CSULA website.

My account still says incomplete, but I'm 110% sure I turned in everything way before the deadline. Getting a little impatient with CSULA at this point, my impressions of them so far have not been positive.

What were your experiences with them?

I didn't get in last year and this cycle I didn't apply because I'm already in a second bachelor program which is pretty much the same thing I needed. Even after rejection mine was kept incomplete....

Good to hear that, where are you doing your 2nd bachelors and in what major?

I'm doing second bachelors at CSU-Northridge majoring in cell-molecular bio. At this point CSUs closed second bachelor due to budget cuts. Also if you can get in, it would be great because the tuition is pretty expensive here compared to CSULA

If CSUs closed 2nd bachelors, how were you able to work towards yours?

never mind thought this was for pre-req career changer , but its an academic enhancer =)

yeah. just an GE. I need only 2 GEs to get the actual degree so might as well as do it.

I think applicants are getting calls now. Anyone receive a call?

Yes, I received a call today.

I'm a little confused because first she asked me if I'm still interested in the certificate program. I wasn't sure what to think of that question...because why else would I be applying? 😕 It was as if she didn't want to waste time unless I still was interested in the program. I guess it makes sense, kind of.

Then she said she will forward her recommendation for my acceptance to the committee. Does that mean I was accepted? Or just pending acceptance? I didn't want to sound stupid and ask.

I asked a few questions, but I didn't have all my questions written down at the time. Her answers were brief, and said I should be getting an email from the program with more details. This also makes me think I was accepted...?

I think they're asking if you're still interested so that they don't offer you a seat and you reject it due to other plans [other smps etc]. Mind sharing your stats?

Hey guys. i just finished the program here. 🙂
my gpa was 3.3 when i got in. If i got all A's this time, my gpa will be at a 3.4 if i got 1 B+...I would have a 3.39...but I guess I have to wait a week to find out. 🙂 my gpa in the program so far is a 3.83. ^^

The classes here are much easier than my home university. Just study and good luck! 🙂

Congratulations!! How many classes did you take a quarter? Are you applying to med school this summer?

I took 3. If u came from a UC, then u will find that although the material is easier, the workload is more..u will get term papers and group presentations in about every science class....

Has anyone got accepted yet ? I am hoping to get a reply soon so I can decide whether to take a job offer or not:/ This is so nerve-wrecking.

Hey I got an email from Alex about my acceptance but the pessimism in me wants to wait for another email just in case this is a mistake like that one year one of the UC's sent acceptance letters to people that got rejected.:/

yeah mspediatrician, seems like all the people that got in should have gotten an email today.

i hope this thread isn't dead yet! did anybody else apply/get accepted to other post-bacc programs, but chose csula over them?
i got into the csula program, and now have a choice between it and top smp program, and i don't know which i should go to. i'm a local so it would be super great to not have to move, but the thing is at the smp i am measured against med students, so adcoms would know just how well i can perform.

of course, i think that means the courses are harder than at csula...
i know that the credo is to "do your best" wherever, but would adcoms weigh GPAs from these two schools very differently? (my undergrad GPA was in the low 3s) my impression is that csula is geared broadly for any health-profession, including allied health, but the smps are more specific and targeted for med/dental.

is there any strong linkage between csula and (ca) med schools (md, do)?

Hello I'm a 4th year undergrad at UC and was interested in the CSULA POSTBAC program. How was the enrollment process, what classes would you recommend, and how was the overall experience being in the program?

If you can pm me that would be great.

Thanks

Hello again,

I have received my CIN & Username as well, my application status currently has a green circle next to it (which indicates that my application is complete). I will keep you guys posted should anything change (i.e., they request further documentation).

*The program is a very very good choice for individuals seeking to attend medical school. I have a medical school mentor who is in his 5th year MD/MBA program and he stated that UCLA and USC accept a great number of pre-meds from CSULA Post-bacc.

-Take care guys 🙂
i know this is 5 years ago, but did your medical school mentor apply the cycle right after he finished the CSULA post-bacc? Did he improve his gpa greatly (assuming thats why he enrolled into the program). Thanks!

You can only get financial aid if you completed your fafsa by march 2. If you did that you can get a grant, a small one. Otherwis, only 12,500 for the entire year. You must submit a form to financial aide, and everything takes forever to be processed. Plus you will get the stipend if you are part of the expanding opportunities. Class selection is not bad at all. They will give you permits to get classes before anyone else does. Michael Chen will always let people in if there is even the slightest room. Almost any class you can get in if it is not a lab, and even then you can still get in if you bring your lab top and upload the cd. I don't know why anyone would complain about classes, its pointless. If anyone needs any advice let me know.

I'm currently deciding between SFSU and CSULA. How did you like CSULA, in terms of professors, class rigor, class size (is it only postbacc or is it w undergrad students as well?), etc. I haven't heard much from the program since my acceptance and I'm scared that the program is as unorganized as the people I've been trying to get in contact w (meanwhile SFSU is very informative and structured but so much more expensive.
