Seems like a great option for me having been recently admitted, but is it true that going to a cal state (vs. a UC) lowers your chances of being admitted to dental school?
Some argue that there might be some sort of difference, but that name factor probably won't compensate for a gap like 3.4 at UC vs. a 4.0 at Cal State. Go where you think you'll fit in best and/or is the best choice for you financially.
It would absolutely be the best choice for me financially. I'm hoping that as long as I do great on the DAT, keep my GPA as high as possible, shadow, have good recommendations and experiences, I won't lose out if I don't end up going to a UC (still waiting to hear if any accepted me). I've seen conflicting views about this, so thank you guys! 🙂
I went to CSUF (the other Cal State nearby) and have gotten 4 interviews so far. Of the 4, I got one acceptance, 1 waitlist, and 2 pending. Originally, I planned on attending a UC but didn't have the funds for it as an incoming freshman. Few other classmates of mine also got into dental school as well so you're not going to be looked down upon. Besides, UCs typically crank more health professions applicants than CSUs because they have more people who've taken the prereqs in comparison to CSU applicants due to larger class seats (one of my core classes only had 40 seats total). Just make sure to get to know your professors for a strong LOR and be informed about the school's Health Professions Committee Letter if they have one. And maintain your grades of course.
