This is the thread I want posted, just for the mods to know, I did post almost the same thread in the everyone forum but it is a dead thread because I have very few replies to it.

now with that out of the way....

okay, here is the scenario. My BF goes to the doctor with symptoms of dizziness, sinus headache, and a popping sound in the ears, with no other symptoms. The doctor prescribes amoxicillin(sp?), zyrtec, and a generic nasal spray because the doctor sees that the patient has fluid buildup in the inner ear. Once the amoxicillin runs out, he is still feeling the dizziness, and goes back to the doctor. The doctor checks his ears again and still finds a little remaining fluid buildup in the inner ear. Then the doctor orders blood tests, for CBC's, and orders tests for a CAT scan, an EKG, and a 24 hour holter monitor. The blood tests come back as his white count being up some, so my BF calls the doctor and asks why and the doctor says that it could be a number of things that caused the patients white count to be up, including a bacterial infection or a viral infection, and thus wants to retest the CBC's in a week.

now, what confuses me is why would the doctor order a CAT scan for the dizziness when there was obvious fluid buildup in the inner ear? Also why would the doctor order the heart monitor tests when he has no history of heart problems whatsoever and was given a clean bill of health on a routine physical done near the beginning of October 2004?
-------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE:

We had the CT scan done on 5/2/2005, and just got the results in. Today, 5/5/2005, my BF also had his EKG done today, as well as he was fitted for his 24 hour holter monitor test today. Here are the results from the following tests that he has had so far, minus the holter monitor and echo:

CT scan: normal results
EKG: sinus bradycardia 59, (also printed on the EKG readout was the word "Normal")
Holter: testing now, will not know results yet.
Echo: not scheduled until 5/18/2005.
-------------------------------------------------------
So is there any way anyone could answer my questions?, because when I went to the dovtor for dizziness a few years ago, the doctor saw I had fluid buildup in my inner ear and just recommended sudafed, which is why I am confused about why a CT scan and all these other tests would be ordered for dizziness.

Thanks for your answers......

first things first. this forum is for discussions ABOUT medicine/radiology by physicians/residents/medical students. It is not meant for those seeking out medical advice. Secondly, why is this a "CT scan" post?? Your post indicates a "normal" CT scan, so what exactly is the question??

Now I have my opinion on the case, but I don't want to second-guess another physician, esp. when I haven't seen the patient. Of key importance would be a thorough history and description of the "dizziness."

p.s. the fluid would be in the middle ear, not the inner ear.
