CT with and without contrast vs MRI

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
CT w/o-
1) looking for lung parenchyma (but not tumors, abscesses, vasculature),
2) head trauma (rules out bleed)
3) Crappy renal function (ie contrast would cause too much harm, MRI with Gad would cause NSF)
4) Looking for a bleed in the belly/RP bleed
5) Looking at bones

CT with IV contrast:
1) Looking for abscesses
2) Looking for tumors (increased blood supply)
3) Looking at vasculature (PE protocol, looking at vasculature in your brain)

MRI
1) Get a better view of the brain
2) Better view of tendons/ligaments
3) MRCP- ie a non-invasive ERCP
4) Cardiac MR for a variety of indications
