Cube Counting Question (from CDP)

what answer did CDP give u? there could be two answers, it could be 13 or 10 depending if they count the cubes in the back that are not visible.

The illusion would be to think the 5 blocks are attached to the top 2 blocks of the front column. Instead, they are attached to the rear column, to the bottom two rows, and there is a column of two cubes obscured by the front column.

OK i totally see how there can be 12 cubes in that picture.
but
I would have no idea how to distinguish between if there were 10 cubes, 12 cubes, or 13 cubes in that pic - they all work
Is there some kind of rule that applies to these cube counting pictures that I don't know about that makes the 12 cube explanation the only correct one?

For one, there should not be any suspended cubes.. Any cubes higher than base level needs to be sitting on another cube, which invalidates counting 10 or 13, as either would require the second level of cubes to be suspended above the ground.
12 would be the reasonable conclusion, but based on the rules given, there could be 11. Since the cubes need to be conjoined, there has to be at least a base level cube in the second back-row column, but not necessarily a second cube on top of that. CDP has a lot of these ambiguous illusions, and you really just have to suck it up and let them trick you that way. On the real exam there won't be multiple possibilities, so don't worry about it. They'll give you a perspective that will clearly indicate whether a cube is there or not.
