CUNY Hunter Feedback Needed

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Going to Hunter for Psychology is a bit of a mix. Expect adjuncts (from Pace, from private practice, some still getting their PhD.) Almost all of my psych. professors at Hunter were students getting doctorates. That's a reality, unless you specifically schedule for tenured doctors.

With that in mind: these are some amazing professors. There's a secret going around that research universities are full of professors that just don't care. Hunter's professors really care, I have to say. They may be about your age, or not speak English entirely fluently, or might even be learning some of the material as they go, but they have a special sort of energy and excitement about it that a 60-year-old, miserable old tenured monster of a professor won't have.

So, pros? Essentially free (no world-crushing debt), full access to professors and labs, no huge egos. Cons.. No prestigious name, probably won't be as demanding as private schools, though that's up to you. You'll publish your own papers, and do your own research, and that's what counts for the PhD.

Thanks Mulsum!
I appreciate the insight into Hunter. I havent heard a response from them about if i have gotten in or not. But i did get into Pace, and am wondering if that is a school worth considering?

I just got accepted today so you might hear from them soon. I am debating between them and Teachers College, I like the program a little more at TC but the price at Hunter for an in state resident is hard to turn down.

Hey GradStudent87,
Congrats on getting in to Hunter!
i've heard a lot of great things about TC. What do you plan on concentrating in? I didnt apply there because they didn't have a concentration in what i want to pursue. Im also considering some other schools...some of which are more expensive, but i think a lot of times you're getting what you pay for. And TC has Columbia's name so I think thats a definite advantage!
Oh and if anyone has any input about Pace, pleas let me know!

I got into the program in personality and psychopathology at TC which fits with my goals to eventually become a therapist most likely. I feel Hunter's program sounds a little geared toward someone with research/academic interests and I think I might like doing research but yea my eventual goal is more clinical in nature. I actually have heard mixed things about people who have gone to TC and yea I don't know how much the Columbia name matters with a Master's degree but I guess it never hurts. Ufortunately I have no idea about Pace, I didn't apply there.

i still haven't heard back from hunter...which has been frustrating, since i talked to the director a couple times and he told me that they are still making decisions. i feel like that could have been a gentle let down? anyone suggestions?

I got the same thing when i emailed the director originally, he said he was still making decisions and then i got in a few days later. I'm not really sure what to tell you, if it's your top choice then maybe go down there or something and see if you can speak with someone in person(idk if you have yet), if not then probably focus your attention on the schools you've already been accepted to.
