Hello,

I am considering applying to CCNY or Hunter, and I have been hearing very mixed reviews about them.

I hear from some sources that both have very strong pre med programs (good advisers and EC opportunities). I've also heard to avoid these schools like the plague because they have developed a bad reputation. Also, what is the deal with these schools only having a 20% to 30% acceptance rate if they don't have a great reputation? Is it just because a huge amount of students apply because they are cheap?

I know it generally does not matter where you attend undergrad, but I am concerned that the reputation of either of these schools may hurt my chances.

Would I be better off at Fordham University?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

if you get good grades at cuny and do well on everything else, theres no reason why you shouldn't get into med. CUNYs aren't prestigious or whatever, but you should be absolutely fine either way. Although yeah if you wanted to switch into finance or something it might not be a good idea lol.

Fordham? Only if you got a big scholarship. It's expensive!

If you're interested in medical school and applying to CCNY, look into the Sophie Davis program. It'll save you a lot of money/time and finish your MD at SUNY-Downstate, Dartmouth, NYU, or some other other participating schools. The program is mainly for minorities, immigrants (ethnicity doesn't matter), or economically disadvantaged students.

yes ^ but sophie davis is extremely competitive but give it a try ... and honestly the name of the school doesnt matter as much as your gpa and your EC do.. so do well in that and i think youll be fine.

Just to correct you Longshanks, Dartmouth is no longer part of the program for sophie davis. The last class to have it is 2012.

and while they say that the program is for minorities [it's really minorities in the medical field], but there are plenty of people in sophie davis that do not fit the bill of what was stated above. Go for it. Better to try and fail than to not have tried at all.
