Hey guys,

I am trying to incorporate the idea of cura personalis into my Georgetown secondary, since it seems to be a big thing about the school, but I don't really know what it means! The school's website is extremely vague about it, just saying that it means "caring for the whole person." Does this mean that the Georgetown-trained physicians will have a "care for the whole person" mentality for their patients or does it mean that the medical school has a "care for the whole person" view of their students?? Soooooo confused! 😱 Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'm going to a jesuit university and this is also their motto. it means they want to mold their kids into someone who will care for the whole person. Almost positive...

They want well rounded students who will be able to care for not only the physical disease of their patients, but also understand possible social, spiritual, cultural and economic factors of their problem as well. So therefore, we as students/doctors need to have an understanding of that too.

I interviewed at Georgetown last year and you are right in saying that the whole cura personalis philosophy is a big deal to them. We spent most of the morning listening to why Georgetown was so revolutionary in this approach. The funny thing is almost all med school train their students in this way of thinking. I got the impression that Georgetown didn't have a whole lot to offer if they had to come up with a sales pitch and cura personalis was the best thing they could think of. I better be careful what I say on here though, because the interview coordinator told us she reads everything that is posted on SDN about Georgetown. Good luck with your applications.

As a M1 at Gtown, maybe I can answer some of your questions.

I think it would be fair to say that cura personalis is both of the things you mentioned. Certainly, the main focus is on training physicians who focus on the whole person. In this regard, we have classes focused on understanding the cultural, economic and geographical aspects of disease and trauma. What groups of people worry about which health issues? Why? DC is a good setting for this.

Obviously, this is not exclusive to Georgetown, and I am sure most medical schools have this basic philosophy, although perhaps not given a clever Latin nickname.

In my first few weeks though, I can say that it seems cura personalis also covers their regards for you. My Gross professor just told us she sees us as her children (putting up a picture of a mother cheetah with her name on it and a bunch of cubs labeled Class of 2009). While this is cheesy, of course, it was nice, and it is reflected in the general attitude of the faculty and administrators.

I may still be in the honeymoon phase, I admit, but I am happy here, at least so far. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask, and I will do my best to help.

for shiz, i'm def rockin cura pers in da sec. word.

IT means nothing other than you have to write about it in an essay and pretend you agree with it, like every other essay you write.

It is just a corny old motto that people occasionally refer to in order to make Gtown look special, everyone cares for the whole person, we learn nothing radically different than any other school.
