surgery is surgery, there is no difference. what are you gonna do, use some mumbo jumbo to miraculously cure/treat someone without involving invasive techniques?
Let's be sure you aren't confusing "osteopathic" medicine with "orthopedic" surgery. They sound similar, but aren't the same. Orthopedic surgeons address functional deformities and diseases of the skeleton and its associated muscles and ligaments. Osteopathic medicine describes a particular method of practicing medicine and includes all specialties. Graduates of osteopathic medical schools obtain the D.O. degree, which, in most of the world, is equivalent in all aspects with the M.D. degree. Osteopathic physicians can obtain training in orthopedic surgery. However, any physician, whether M.D. or D.O. will train in basic surgical techniques. For more on osteopathic medicine, check out http://www.osteopathic.org/ and for information about all surgical specialties practiced by osteopathic physicians (the same number as M.D.) visit http://www.facos.org.
If you are unsure about the aspect of surgery, do not worry. Some are more comfortable than others. You should ask a physician to help you with setting up a shadowing experience in the operating room. Once you see for yourself, you may be surprised.
