I have been reading a lot of posts and seems to me that there is a lag of a year between acceptance and starting medical school. Is this common? why is this? ( maybe I have been missing something all this time. just curious) I figured that I would start my application process in april get accepted then start in the fall is there something about the application process have not seen?

I was about to say that some choose to take a year off and some don't.... but looking back at your post I guess that's not the way to answer it....

You are definitely missing something....

The entire medical school application takes a year....

You would need to take the MCAT's in April (As that is the time you've indicated), apply in June, turn in secondaries between July and February (or something like that), then wait for an interview, go to the interview, and then wait for an acceptance or a rejection.... Buddy, that takes ONE ENTIRE YEAR!!!

Please let me know if I had miss understood you question.... 😎

I notice something else.... You're relatively new to SDN....

WELCOME TO SDN!!! Just keep on postin' and most of us are pretty helpful around here.... 😀

okay a little misunderstood but more my fault then anything else. you could say i was feeling the waters because I have heard both ways of application. In the Biochem program I am in EWU they have a 3rd year cut off after your done with the pre req's for medical school which I hear some do. and was wondering how someone does that application process in such a short time.

I figured that there was a year for application was more curious if there was more than a year involved. For example: I finish my reqs for MCAT take it in april then start my application finish off my BS in bio chem and Psych. then in late august or september start med school ( crossing fingers). I was more curious if there was a nother year wait after an acceptance into a school. It seems like a lot of individuals take time off for me there would be no time off, finish one degree and then off for another, right into med-school.

Okay... I got it now....

Let me see if I get your logic here....

1) You'll take the April MCAT's.... let give it a date 2002
2) Apply in June 2002
3) Do your secondaries and interviews while you're finishing your B.S. ('02-'03)
4) Get accepted for entering class 2003,
5) Then enter that fall of 03, after you've finished your B.S.

If I'm right then.... I think you might have just misunderstood some of the other postings.

Although, you can defer your entrance to medical school. Some medical schools allow this.

If you feel that you want to go straight from undergrad to medical school, by all means do. As long as you don't burn out then more power to you.

I had a colleague at work who went straight from undergrad to medical school and after the first semester I called him back.... The first thing that came out of his mouth was how much more laid back, mature, well-rounded, etc.,etc. those that took a few months off before medical school. Does he regret it, no!!! It's just something he observed. Midway through the second sem, he mentioned how he feels a bit burned out....

Did he still succeed? Of course....

Personally, I choose to take the time off to do things I haven't done or things I've always wanted to do. Now, I'm so bored, I'm ready to hit the books again.... I now have a different attitude and drive towards, what will become, my medical school education and degree.

So to answer your previous posting.... and if I understand you correctly this time.... then you didn't miss anything with the app process. Some postings must have just been a bit misunderstood or mistyped....

geez, I hope I didn't lose you there and I hope that helped a bit.... 😎

LOL nah you didn't lose me but I thought maybe I was smokin' crack though. actually I am a 25 year old sophmore if you look at when I graduate which will be in prob 2004 because I am a double major ( I am a glutton for punishment).

I took a couple years off for a religous mission and help take care of my sick father who has a genetic liver disorder.

I guess you could say that I feel the pressure of getting through school and getting going on my dream before I have to retire and I am thinking about serving as a doctor in the Navy. any naval doctors out there that want to give pointers I woudl be really grateful. 😀

I tried out for the Navy HPSP....

To get more info, call your local recruiter around December.... They'll hook you up with the medical corp recruiter.

I'm sorry to hear about your father.... Hope he's doin' fine!!!

There are other trend that talk about Navy HPSP... you should make a search.

If I don't get the NHSC then I'll probably try out for the Navy HPSP again.... Good luck dude!!!
