Hi all!

I am a latecomer to applying to medical school (non-trad working in mental health field with direct patient care/ resource connection, writing psychosocial evaluations with patients, and other social work like experience etc...).

Looking to apply in the next year or two - but need a bit of GPA repair (couple A's or so in strong science courses would boost me above 3.0 sgpa due to how few science courses I took in undergrad, but I don't have every pre rec and need to retake something similar to intro to cell bio and genetics (which is the class I'm looking to repair) before hand. As I have a full time job, a formal post bacc would be difficult without evening classes/the financial cost is a factor. I was a psychology student with a ton of psych and neuroscience courses (PSY classes, but had a science type topics to them). My GPA in my Master of Public Administration was way between 3.97, but it wasn't science based. I'm thinking of a DIY between local colleges nearby. What credits would you recommend I take if I go the DIY route to show readiness? Or is it not worth it to go DIY with Community college/local Universities at this point and just go formal post bacc? If so how did you all manage that financially?

Thanks again!

If finances are an issue, a d i y post bac is
fine.

It's also fine to do this at a local community college or your local universities. I recommend taking at least two courses per semester to demonstrate that you can handle the load. Do not take organic chemistry or physics during the summer!

The benefits of a formal post back are that you get advising, and potentially MCAT prep as well.

Medical schools are not going anywhere, and in fact, by the time you apply more will have opened their doors. You could work for a few years save up your money, and then do your post bac full time.
