That is pretty sweet! Isn't it intersting how things work out? And now you have two adorable kids! I met my ex-husband at the restaurant I started working at when I was 16. We were the first to get married followed by 7 seven sets of our friends from the restaurant. It was kind of crazy.

It is because I would never have imagined this would be my life and to think now we'll be moving to Arizona!! Your story reminds me of the band people at my school. There were all kinds of hookups going on in the group.

Totally cool! 👍 I was in gymnastics but I sucked. I got to level 6 I think. I think the numbering is universal if I remember correctly. My mom pulled me out when I was 12 bc I hit my sister during practice and I never went back.

Wow your sister must be a wimp! My sister used to kick me in the stomach, hard, but she couldn't keep me down! 😉

She was making fun of me so she kind of deserved it. But honestly, I was pretty mean to her when we were kids and I feel bad about it now. I would hit her or something, not very hard, and she would run and tell and then I would be like, "It was just a love pat." I think she still holds a grudge about it. 🙄

I'm guessing your sister is older than you, am I right?

That does not sound like much fun. Where did the body parts come from? I've never heard of this before. Did you enjoy this? What types of things was done with the tissue? Just wondering. 🙂

We got the tissue from people who were organ and tissue donors within 24 hours of their death. I dissected aortic, mitral and pulmonary valves from whole hearts, cryopreserved them and then sent them off to hospitals where they were surgically implanted into patients . . . same thing with the vascular and orthopedic tissue (replacing veins in patients with diabetes and ACL/meniscus replacement in people with orthopedic injuries).

Meeting the pediatric patients was what I enjoyed the most, though. 🙂 It was sad to receive a 3 month old baby's heart, who had dies of SIDS, and dissect it, but then I would get to meet the baby who received the heart valve. I can't even describe the feeling! 😍 Overall, it was a really cool job and it was what originally inspired me to pursue medicine. 😀

Yep! Are you the older one too because it sure sounds a lot like how my sister was with me. 😛 Ahhh good times. We're really close now so I don't hold it against her all the times she knocked the wind out of me or gave me the silent treatment with her friends. 🙄

Wow, that does sound cool and very honorable. I've never heard of this before. So you're probably going to do pretty good in Anatomy? I was worried that the body parts might be coming from somewhere else.

Reading about the sibling stories is bringing me back! I have a younger brother and a younger sister, so I was the one being mean and beating them up (well mostly beating up my brother because he was being mean to my sister). 😳

It went something like this:

Me: Kick little brother for being annoying.

Brother: Pull my sisters hair because he's mad at me for kicking him (he can't kick me back because I'm bigger than him).

Sister: Tells me that my brother pulled her hair, so I proceed to kick him again for pulling my sisters hair.

It was a vicious cycle! We're all really close now, though. I don't think anyone has any hard feelings . . . at least I hope not.

 That's funny! My sister and I are 2.5 yrs apart and my brother is about 8 years than me and we would gang up on him. The one he never lets us live down is when we forced him to eat dog food while we were babysitting him.

Yeah, anatomy was familiar just because I'd seen it all before, but learning all the names in detail was definitely new.

Where did you thing the tissue was coming from? 😱

Uh ... maybe fetuses but I wasn't thinking how easy it would be to preserve a recently deceased adult or baby. Even if they were, I understand the need to save or improve other people's lives and it would have happened one way or another so I wouldn't be judging.

Well that sounds like fun! Although being the younger sister I can probably identify more with being beaten up than doing the beating. I do have two younger brothers but my stepmom would have skinned me alive if I touched her boys. They are 6 and 7 years younger than me. One time I babysat them they chased me with plastic bats so I locked myself in my room while they pounded on the door with the bats. My stepmom got mad at me because I couldn't really watch them if I was in my room. 🙄 How much younger are they?

Man I knew you were the older one! You and my sister could get together and swap stories. My sis and I are 2.5 years apart too. Technically 2 years 7 months and 9 days older. I can't believe you made your brother eat dog food!! :barf: Did he ever get you back for that?

Ewww yeah, that would be creppy if we were growing the organs from fetuses! Ahhh! :scared: Total science fiction!

Yeah, so basically if someone who died was an organ and tissue donor, we would get their organs/tissues from the procurement bank. It's kinda weird, I know. I have to admit it was disturbing at times.

Wow, your stepbrothers sound like they were little nightmares! :meanie: That's so unfair that you couldn't get them back because of your stepmom!

My brother, sister and I are all 2 years apart. 21, 23 and 25 (but I'm turning 26 in a couple of hours). :hardy:

I don't think he ever got us back specifically but he was a terror. We would have to watch him all summer and he would just dissapear to other people's houses and had this thing with calling 911 for fun. A dispatcher had to call me and make sure it wouldn't happen again.

It sounds kind of like we were in the same boat sibling-wise. My stepfather worshipped the ground that my brother walked on and he could do no wrong. If my stepfather was around, he could do just about anything to us and we just had to take it. He didn't have to help around the house because he was a 'boy' which was really just code for 'my child'. That's probably why we were so mean to him. Anyway, I'm really proud of him now. He's a junior majoring in Chemical Engineering (He wants ot do biomedical stuff) but almost didn't finish high school and we are really close.

Well they're actually my half-brothers so I at least have to half love them. 😉 They're pretty cool now though but I rarely get to see them. I think 2 years apart is a pretty good spread between kids. I almost forgot tomorrow is your birthday!! Here it's already your birthday so....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRIONS!!!:hardy:

I'm starting to think we're the same person. If it wasn't for the fact that you could kick my *** in roller derby we could be. 😉

Awww thanks guys! 😍:hardy:

Too bad I have to work tomorrow. Wait a minute, I thing I might be feeling a little sick all of a sudden *cough* *cough* 😉

OMG, t-funk you play roller derby? That's awesome! I've always wanted to try that, but I'm kinda (ok, very) scared! :scared:

 T-funk, we both just passed the 1000th post mark! We're officially addicted to SDN! 😉

Maybe sisters? I'm the older one. JK. But it's crazy the similarities.

Man that stinks! This year on my birthday I will have class from 9-12 and 2-5. It's always more effective if you feel more sick all of a sudden, like this :barf: 😉

Oh .. it's like the funnest thing ever. It's not scary as long as you don't mind getting hurt. I actually quit in October due to all the interviews and other stuff going on in my life but I would like to do it again. KC has the # 1 team in the nation right now so I will at least go check it out if I move to KC, maybe volunteer or ref, and skate a little, if they let me.

1000 posts, I never though I would get there. I do kind of feel like an addict doped up on SDN sometimes. It is sad. Strange how we both hit 1000 at about the same time and it's your b-day. :zip::zip::zip: It must mean something. 😀

Probably. Come to think of it, you do look half Chinese!! 😀 Woo hoo for you and prions joining the 1k club!!

 I could just picture you showing up to an interview with a black eye or something! That wouldn't be a good situation! I really want to try it one of these days.

You two are braver than I am. I'm scared of falling down, getting hurt etc. :scared:

Actually, at my DMU interview we had to say something about ourselves in the morning. You probably did too I'm guessing. So I said that I did roller derby and I talked about my name. Since I wore a skirt to my interviews, I mentioned that I have a bunch of bruises on my legs right now and not to mind them. I was particularly bruised up at that time for some reason but then quit a couple of weeks later. 🙁

I work at Macy*s as a sales associate. Although it's not the BEST job ever, I'm not totally disappointed with it since in retail you meet with a wide variety of people. Also it helps a bit with the medical field since it teaches you proper customer service and in a way, our patients are our customer's, so it helps me in having good bedside manner's.

I graduated from university four years ago. Since then I've been a biochem research assistant at UTSW Medical Center (awesome job, btw), a reactor operator, and now I'm sort of a secretary/medical assistant/CNA without the "C" part, and a part-time nanny (that's my favorite). I'm a jack of all trades at the moment

 That's hilarious! I didn't like that part of the interview day . . . it seemed like everyone was trying to "one up" the next persons answer. One kid said his Mom used to work for the CIA and I was like hmmm are you supposed to tell people that? 😕 When it was my turn I just said I know how to make bagels and cream cheese, because my parents owned a couple of bagel shops while I was growing up . . . everyone kinda looked at me like "that's it".

Right now I'm a clinical consultant dietitian working at nursing homes (SNF's), HIV clinics, and I teach undergraduate nutrition courses. I really like the teaching and will be sad to have to stop it. Also, the HIV clinics are a great experience. The SNF's however, are sucking my soul dry of life. It's not that I don't like the residents or the environment, I'm just tired of feeling like I'm really not allowed to do a whole lot. I basically can recommend or suggest changes, but have no real power to do anything (I've heard the same complaints from many Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, and Social Workers). Hence, I'm going to medical school to expand what I know and can do for the patients. Sounds cliche', but it's so very true. Of course nutrition is important, if not critical in everyone's life; but, I'm just so f***ing tired of feeling handicapped and peripheral in the healthcare industry. It's making me severely apathetic to my current profession and is rapidly making me want to do less and less as a dietitian (since I feel like it won't really do any good anyway!).

Sorry, I've just had a very bad day and am in desperate need of venting...+pity+

That job title sounds pretty interesting. What does being a Public Health Service Officer entail?

Go to USPHS.GOV for more info. Basically we are the uniformed component of the Department of Health and Human Services. We have the same uniform and ranks as the Navy and our mission is to protect public health. We are assigned to all government agencies (FDA, CDC, NIH BOP, IHS, FBI, CIA, et al...). Our commanding officer is the Surgeon General of the United States.

whattttt!!!! the poll is at 98!!!!!!!

TWO SHORT 😡😡😡😡😡😡

So I said that I did roller derby and I talked about my name.
I didn't know roller derby was so big until a couple of years ago, when my sister-in-law took it up. She's on a team out of Austin.

That's awesome. They are even working on getting it back on TV right now. We will see. A lot of the girls don't want to lose it again to producers and other people, etc, being in charge rather than the girls.

I'm a flight Paramedic, although it can be a fun and exciting job I constantly feel guilty ever since I got serious about wanting to go to medical school. When I first started I loved it because of the vast amount of clinical knowlege and training available, now I feel kind of like I neglect that cont. Ed. part of my job because I'm to busy studying for the MCAT :scared:

Woo hoo,

You got 100 desijigga.

I'm still pretty sure I would cry if someone knocked me down on purpose. 😳

Awww EEL08 you're too sweet to play roller derby! That made be sad thinking about your little sad face if someone knocked you down. 🙁

See if someone knocked me down, I would get real crazy and try my damndest to knock them down 10 times harder!!!

I'm currently a pilot for Life Flight. Unlike many people on here I don't hate my job but I am ready for something a little different. I have been a pilot for about ten years now, most of which was flying for the airlines, which was mind numbing and I got really tired of hotel rooms. The Life Flight job is good but don't want to spend the rest of my life doing it, the switch to medicine will be good for me and my wife yet really hard on the bank account for a few years🙁.

Work in a very busy EMS service. I am beginning to really despise my job but i'll be doing something like this until 2010 at least.

dxu

I'm a singer in a band, a babysitter, and I work in a research lab running qPCR reactions, preparing samples, and other biology-related odd jobs.

Although I have put in applications for research internships for the summer of 2008, I am REALLY looking for a good health-related summer job in the Bay Area that will give me some experience working in my community.

I am currently working on my undergrad degree, so there are many opportunities that I'm NOT eligible for, because I don't have a bachelor's. Ugh, frustrating!

Ideas???

(thanks in advance!) 😛

I'm a manager in one of my parents' restaurent around the chitown area along with some psych research which doesn't pay 🙁. i'll probably see if it is possible to get something going in New York before i start school there <-- probably won't happen considering the time and money it takes especially for new york

I own my own cafe/gelateria in Chicago. I designed it myself the way it looks, put a lot of work into it. Who would have though a degree in biology, with minors in chemistry and bioethics would get me here. lol.

Wow the cafe looks fab! I'm curious, why did you decide on med school over the cafe? It seems like you put a lot of heart into as well. My husband and I owned a printing & graphics biz after we first graduated from school. And although we would NEVER go into that industry again, we miss having our own thing. Definately has its perks!

Hey, maybe all that chemistry could help you make cool drinks, hmmm maybe some new mocha creations... not really I know, but worth a shot.
