A friend who is a current med student at a school that offered me an interview wants to write a LOR for me and submit it to the admissions committee speaking about my experiences and fit for the school. Does/will this LOR have any impact on my application?

edit: this school has a program set up and med students are encouraged by the dean to do so.

Unless the school is one of those rare ones that requests a peer letter, I suggest you decline. The perception of trying to "pull strings" to facilitate a school acceptance could invoke similarities to recent related media coverage in adcomm minds.

Even if this school has a program set up and med students are encouraged by the dean to do so? I’m not trying to pull strings but my friend said the school administration told students they could do this so I’m just confused about the impact it may have. I’m guessing it will have marginal impact

This information should have been in the first post. If the school has a system in place to facilitate these types of internal recommendations, then by all means, use it. Every boost, no matter how small, helps in the admissions process.

Peer recommendations have much more weight for residency and fellowship, particularly in smaller programs where a single dud can cause major problems

Oops sorry! Yeah I should have mentioned that earlier. Also FWIW, I should have made it more clear that I didn’t ask this student for a LOR, they offered to write one.

Maybe you should update your OP. Or even close the thread. If the school encourages this I’m not sure why you even asked the question since it seems pretty school specific. Good luck on the interview.
