Hello all,

I am a second year MHA (Masters of healthcare administration) student. I graduated 2 years ago with my BS in biology and cum laude. I've been having this regret lately. You see, I always had plans to pursue something clinical in the healthcare field. I applied to dental school, and was rejected from all the schools I applied. Not a big deal because I then later realized I didn't actually want to be a dentist. Undergrad had burnt me out so bad I decided to hell with anything science related, so I decided to apply to an MHA program because it was still healthcare related, but business instead of science. I can't help but think I made a huge mistake. I'm doing really well in my classes and I do love the thought of working in a huge hospital someday and maybe even having a C-suite position. Still, since the beginning of this semester and with graduation creeping up, I have this lingering feeling and an itch to go back to school to pursue medicine. Before wanting to be a dentist, I always thought about being a doctor, my dad and my grandpa were both doctors, so medicine is nothing new to me.

Anyway, does anyone have any pointers on how I should approach this? I am set to graduate May 2018, then do an internship, but after that, it's up to me really. I already have a BS in biology, all prereqs done, and some shadowing. Should I work for a year, then apply to medical schools? Please help! Any tips are appreciated!

PS I graduated with a 3.6 from undergrad.

Also, this isn't just something I woke up one day thinking about. It's been lingering in my mind for about a year or two, I just now decided to express it.

There are many threads that touch on this subject that can be found through the search feature. If you want specific feedback, you should post your stats (cGPA, sGPA, MCAT scores) and I'm sure someone will help you out. Majority of us here (in this sub-forum) are starting out from a much worse situation than you seem to be. So at least you have that going for you. Good luck 🙂

It can be done. I finished my MHA in 2016 and started medical school this semester. You will need to check every box that traditional applicants spend time on as well as keep your graduate GPA up.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply! Did you work as an administrator any? I kinda want to work while I’m studying for the MCAT.

Yes, I moved back to my home state and worked for a large hospitalist group as an administrator over 3 sites before medical school.

I also took the MCAT the summer after the 1st year of grad school, while working as an intern, and applied early the following year. I would study 5P-10P during the week and as much as possible on the weekends.

But I was a post-screw-up. Did a DIY post-bac before grad school (4.0 with 40 hours) while box checking, then completed the MHA program at a very reputable school while knocking out the MCAT.

It's a long process - best advice is to only take the MCAT once you are hitting acceptable numbers and apply once you have everything aligned.

I haven’t looked at this feed in a while! Do you have any tips on how to juggle med school apps & work?

School needs to be a priority! If you can't get good grades given your current schedule, something else have to give. From your first post, however, you sound to be in great shape.
