Current Research Interests?

Also, so when an essay asks for your CURRENT research interests, are they looking for the research that you are conducting now, or what you are currently interested in doing for your PhD/career. For me, these are not the same thing. On most other apps it seems a lot more clear, I thought this was kinda vague. How dd you guys field this question??

I just put what fields/topics I'm currently interested in pursuing my PhD. Is this still for Northwestern?
