I have a particular research question, about curve fitting to some data. Before I get into it: would this be the right place to post? I ask b/c I don't see any particular research questions here.

Maybe? Generally if its statistical question your institution should have a staff biostatistician that can help you with stuff. Even the smallest of hospitals have statistician on staff so you may want to try and find that resource at your home institution.
