I'm a very indecisive person and leaving this down to the wire of course. I'm very interested in Peds/ Child Psychiatry/ Health Equity work. I would like to be a part of transforming the healthcare system to be more equitable for children/ consider how childhood trauma (ACEs) influences health. I'm hoping to find a school that not only makes me a good clinician but builds my understanding of how to be a part of these larger issues I care about. I do have to consider my fiance as we'll be moving together. He'd like to stay in the tristate area for work.
Curious also if med students feel that integrated, problem-based education is truly important (i.e. worth of being a deciding factor). I like active, case-based learning. I think it's more motivating and puts the material in better context.
Hoping that students from these schools can weigh in. Thank you!
CUSOM:
Pro:
- Most focused on health equity it seems
- LIC, have a chronic illness and think it would be best for me scheduling wise/ if I get sick
- CHOC top ranked children's hospital right on campus, another applicant raved about his experience working there on my interview day
- Liked the community of students, seemed really supportive
Con:
- Far from partner's family, who he wants to be near, and mine (which isn't of as much significance as it is for my partner)
- Match list mainly Midwest/ West Coast; we'd probably want to return to the Northeast for my residency
RSOM
Pro:
- Close to partner's family
- Could claim residency 2nd yr
Cons:
- My student interviewer basically told me that if I have an interest in Primary Care-related issues, not to come here
- Did not really feel like I jived with the students, very young group (I'm a 28 y/o nontrad student so would like to not feel like an odd ball)
RWJ
Pro:
- Incredible match list (esp. in Peds)
- Close to my parents, which is not the most important thing for me
- Spoke with M4 matching to CHOP for Peds and she could not say enough of how great her clinical experience was
- Enjoyed my conversations with faculty during my MMI sessions, seemed to want to push students
- Cheapest
Cons:
- Surrounding area/ med school quite depressing (from NJ)
- Did not really feel like I jived with the students either
- Curriculum least updated- not integrated
