Hello,

I was hoping to get some advice on what is the difference between buying a night guard that is custom made vs buying a generic one from the store.

My night guard is falling apart and since getting another customized guard is a hefty price, I was wondering how "safe" it would be to take my chances with an OTC night guard.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would not recommend a generic one as the guards are not properly adjusted for potentially harmful jaw movements that are unique to you, which are taken into account with custom-made bite guards. Improperly adjusted guards can damage temporomandibular joints and teeth.

Thank you for your response. The one from prodental allows for molding. Is there a difference in molding between the prodental one vs. a custom guard?

Also, do you happen to know what the price range is for a custom guard? I remember several years ago I paid around $100 after insurance coverage.

E: another random question: my night guard is thicker on the front of my teeth relative to the back. Is there a reason for that?

I'm a heavy bruxxer (is that a word?), and I've tried 2 different OTC night guards. Each lasted less than a month before I would go through it. I've had my custom one for over 3 years, and it's holding up great. It's also more comfortable.

However, it's ridiculous how much offices charge. The office I worked at charged $400+, while it only cost them $60 in lab fees plus materials. I've heard of some offices charging up to $600. If that's true, selling night guards is a very profitable venture.
