CV questions

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The length of a CV in academia is different from that of a resume in the corporate world. Most people have a number of pages. I wouldn't worry a lot about length. What I think is more important is a format that clearly draws attention to your bigger accomplishments. Once you have a draft that you are happy with, make sure to run it by some of your current (or recent) psych profs.

Good luck!

On the CV, if you've had a poster accepted that is happening in 2013 (march)- how would you cite the date? As 2013?

I say "poster to be presented at xxx conference."

I went to a really small not well respected College. Maybe 30-40 students graduating this year, although there are usually slightly more.

I was named the Salutatorian, and also named to get some research award.

Should I list these as awards on my C.V.?
Will it be viewed as a bad thing that I only came in second place out of 30 students?

Are listing things like deans list and dean's scholarships things that should be listed?

This Who's Who in American Colleges (or smthing like that) is not something I should include, right?

On a somewhat separate but related note:
What about a paper I wrote that was published in my College's Political science journal (not something they do often, but its a nice collection of undergraduate papers). Is there some way to report quasi publications? Or just leave it out?

Also, is writing that you were a psych tutor a good thing, or kinda nebby?

Thanks SDNer's!!

I would list them, there is no harm to it. Just be aware that it won't have any major impact.

I doubt anybody will look up the size of your graduating class.

At your stage I would list any scholarship you receive.

Won't have any impact whatsoever, but I'd leave it on there for now.

On my CV I have a separate section for non-peer reviewed publications which is where I'd put that. Again, it won't matter thaaaaat much and definitely doesn't measure up to a peer-reviewed publication, but it still shows that you're an engaged and active student which is something desirable.

Also, is writing that you were a psych tutor a good thing, or kinda nebby?
At your stage, I would definitely dedicate a line on my CV to it.

I wouldn't put it in. Don't you have to pay for it or take some effort to have it done and then they want you to buy it? I dunno, I may be off. But it's always has seemed vaguely scammish to me. Like preying on naive people (who get decent grades).

On that note, not that you asked, but I'd be less likely to hire someone who writes on their CV that they are a member of MENSA. It's off-putting, and mostly because some people spoiled it for everyone by being obnoxious.

Ditto. I would leave that off. Vaguely scammish is exactly my impression of it as well.

If someone wrote on their CV that they're in MENSA, I'd ask them what the confidence interval and homogeneity of their FSIQ was 😉
