I just got hired at CVS to work back in the pharmacy. I have no previous pharmacy experience, so I'm guessing I'll be starting off as a clerk just working the register. I've worked in the retail environment before (Eckerd front-end customer service and photo-lab), but never before in a pharmacy.

Anyways, I just got finished with these training CDs and I'm on information overload. One of the CDs went over third party billing compliance, and now I'm afraid that if I mess up with entering data into the computer or if I do something wrong that I'll get into serious trouble. I'm probably just worrying too much.

Do any of you guys have any advice and/or tips for a newcomer working in the pharmacy?

Interesting... I start my job at CVS pharmacy tomorrow.. and I was not given any such CD's... just a lil book to read over... but I'm in dallas... so maybe they have different rules or training program.

I'm also planning on taking my pharm tech exam this saturday... and I have barely studied anything! :scared:

Not to scare you, but the liklihood of a mistake a some point is VERY high. I have a friend that says to me, it is not if, but when will a mistake be made. I know that it sounds rather disconcerting.... you just do your best to try not to make them. The best advice I would offer is to NOT be afraid to talk with the pharmacist or another co-worker if you have a question on something. The dumbest question is the one never asked.

Believe in yourself, and ask questions when you have them. If you do these things, I am sure you will do fine. Good luck and congratulations!

Sincerely,
FutureRxGuy

There should be a Pharmacy Trainer who u can set up meetings with the get ur official hands-on training in. They'll work with you every step of the way. But untill u show the initiative and set up the meetings, u'll be working as a PSA forever🙂

Sincerely,

Ex-CVS employee

When I began as a tech five or six years ago (Walgreens), my biggest fear was making an irreversable error, too. The pharmacist assured me that as long as I learned from my mistakes, they would not be in vain. That made me feel a little better, anyway 🙂

I don't know how the computer system is set up at CVS, but if it's anything like ours, virtually every screw-up that you make can be fixed with a little effort. Remember, the pharmacist will be there to check your work and to answer any questions you might have... don't be afraid to talk to him/her!

When is your first day on the job?

If you have specific questions, PM me and I'll be glad to help if I can. Good luck to ya!

My best advice would be to work in the pharmacy as many hours as you can and for consecutive days, as opposed to just a couple hours here and there. From my personal experience, doing so has helped me learn a lot by giving me the opporunity to face as many challenges as possible. The more challenges you face and overcome at your job, the better you will be at it. Some of the problems when working at the pharmacy couldn't be resolved by the end of the pharmacist's and my shift. So it was real good to be able to be there the next day and observe what additional steps were taken to resolve the problem. That way, if such a problem ever occured in the future, it was taken care of more quickly and smoothly and so we could go on to deal with other matters in the pharmacy.

Thanks for all the great advice! 🙂

My first day is next Tuesday (spring-break week for me). I'm getting around 19 hours that week, so I'll try to soak up as much as I can. The particular CVS that I'll be working at seems to stay pretty busy, so that's a positive as far as getting more experience on the job goes. Also, everyone there seems to be pretty friendly for the most part, so that's a plus.

Thanks Julianne. I'll be sure to PM you if I get stumped. 😉

It's nice to know that most mistakes can be corrected. I think they just try to scare you in the training videos so that you will not mess up and they will not lose money.

It will definately be difficult at first, I remember being stressed in my early days. But dont worry, you will be fine as time goes on. And dont worry too much about making ireversible errors, most of the time you will find workplace very friendly and helpful. Its not as serious as those CDs make itsound. If you have worked in retail before you will be fine 👍

Cvs system is not staellite linked and doesnt even use windows. But the good thing is I heard pharmacists at walgreens need to check remote prescriptions thru satellites from different stores if they are not busy. This is not the case with CVS.
