anyone understand how the payroll works? the pharmacists have to submit the hours now, rather than the scheduler inputting the hours. from the example i gather, whether you work or not you still get your scheduled pay for that week. then on the holiday, if its your off day, you get paid 8 hours. if you work that day (example 12 hours), you add 12 hours. isnt' that insane?

for instance, 40 hours /week + 12 hours (labor day) = 52 hours total.
alternately, 40 hours / week + 8 hours (off day) = 48 hours.

now let's reduce that further...
for instance, 40 hours / week + 7 hours (labor day) = 47 hours.
alternately, 40 hours / week + 8 hours (off day) = 48 hours.

get it? you work your butts off on labor day for 7 hours, but you get paid less than the person who went fishing that day! or if you work 8 hours on labor day, you only get equal pay as the person going to the beach! that's insane!

No, you don't really understand math. If your day to work is labor day, and you have a 40 hour base, meaning including labor day, you worked 40 hours and got paid for 40 hours. In addition you are paid the nine hours (non 24 hour stores) for working on the holiday. So you worked for and got paid for 49.

Your partner worked 40 and got paid for 40 + 8 hours of holiday. You didn't work any extra and probably less as most non 24 hr stores have one pharmacist for 14 hours. So you were probably supposed to work 8-10 and got paid for that as well as for what you worked on the holiday....

Yes, this is correct. Working on the day of the holiday does not give any added benefit (except the relatively reduced stress for that day) unless you work for more than 8 hours.
 
working on holidays gets you time and a half. Not working on holiday gets you holiday pay at regular pay rate. So no it's not the same.

8 x 1.5 is not equal to 8 x 1

It may be different in various areas, but we do not get 1.5x for working on the holiday in our district, only 8 hours added to what we worked that week.

That's california talk. Full timers here cannot get time and a half.
 
The only thing us ivory tower hospital Pharmacists get on Labor Day and every other holiday is a sweet parking spot since HR and half the staff are MIA.
 
thats better than other chain that I know. if your base for 2 weeks is 77 and and you have to work on holiday you will get paid 73 + 8 hrs of holiday, and if you dont have to work on holiday you will get paid 77 + 8 hrs of holiday which is totally insane......... you will actually get paid less for that pay period........

Seriously? Why would anyone work a holiday if they were going to get paid less than if they didn't work it? Why would you not get paid for the hours that you actually worked (ie if your base is 77, and you work 77 hours, why in the world would they only pay you for 73 hours?) I've never heard of any place doing this.......I've only seen 2 different ways of computing holiday pay for pharmacists done, 1) the holiday pay is considered part of the PTO, so holidays are treated the same as any other day or 2) everyone gets the holiday pay, so if you work, you get the holiday pay in addition to the hours you worked, if you didn't work, then you get the holiday pay for your day off work.

Because CVS payroll policies have slowly become twisted into nonsense.

Let's just say holiday fall in your schedule and on one of the weekdays, so you would be working only 8 hours as most chain drugs are open only for 8 hours instead of 12 so you work only 8 hours that day and for that reason your base hr for that particular pay period is only 73 (77 -12+8)hours instead of 77.
There is no incentive to work on holidays at all and if you have to work, you are total loser....
 
So I worked on Labor day and my 14 hour day became an 8 hour day. Me and my partner both got 8 hours holiday pay but I worked 6 hours less than he did that week (38 vs 44). Is that not a benefit of working the holiday? Am I missing something?

No, but you only get paid for hours you actually work. In you case, you base is for your store is 44 hours, so you will get paid for 38 hours (hrs that you actually work)+ 8 hours of holiday vs your partner 44 + 8 hours

PS I am not sure how CVS payroll policies work but I am talking about other chain drug stores here

I get paid for 44+8, the same as my partner, but I only worked 38. I don't know which chain you are referring to, but some people seem to be saying that at CVS there is no benefit to working a holiday. There is. I am in FL if that changes anything. Which chain are you referring to?

This is not technically the case. Technically you are only supposed to be paid for those 44-38 = 6 hours you "didn't work" if you make them up during the week (staying late, coming in early etc.). Not all RPh payroll people ask, but in my district you have to specifically let the scheduler know that you made up the hours of the holiday in order to be paid for them.
 
I was off on July fourth and the pharmacy was closed.It was supposed to be
one of my 13 hrs days. I did get paid for hrs holiday and 5 hrs under base to get my full 82 hrs. I am in fl

But if your base is 42 and you only work 36 because the store is closed early on Labor Day, you get paid for 36 (hours worked) + 8 hours holiday pay = 44. Unless you make up those 6 hours during the week. This is how every district near me does it, I've checked with friends after reading this thread.

You are right and I am wrong. They changed it a year or so ago.

again there's no extra benefits to working holiday. not sure why u only work 38 instead of 44, did u take PTO or vacation? so in essence they still use your 44 hours regular week, + 8 hours labor day. just like your partner. no extra benefit working holiday.

lets say on a normal week u don't take PTO or vacation, that week u work 44 hours like every week that u do, then 44 + 8 = your partner going fishing on labor day. nothing extra.
 
In this age, most major companies have figured out that it really is not difficult to get people to work on holidays. Formally, they had to offer incentives for people to actually work on the day, but now people will do it because they are so broke that they constantly have to fear for their jobs (so they simply cannot refuse). Remember when retail (including CVS) paid extra for working on Sundays and pharmacists were bold enough to take sicks days and work at another chain? Those days are long gone because we need to have our BMW and 3,500+ sqft house right NOW. They own us...
