So I'm new to the forum and a new cvs tech. So far Ive had my pick up and drive thru training and my production training. My store is super busy an I only had 4 hours of training before being thrown to the wolves. When answering the phone I know how to check if the customer has a precription ready to be picked up an I know how to look in the patients profile to try an refill a prescription. There are a few things that I'm unclear of an I feel my coworkers an pharmacist are getting impatient with me.

1. How do I know if the doctor faxed over a new set of refills .Will it say 00 or is there something specific I should look for? I always just try to fill it an see if it says no refills or if it lets me try to fill it.

2. When I try to refill a prescription an hit f12 an there is a third party rejection . What are the commands to go to the page to find out why. Also what commands do I enter to try an change the insurance if it tried to submit through the wrong insurance.

3. How do I put a prescription on hold. When a customer says "delete it I don't need it or want it. What are the steps and commands.

4. When can I switch the NDC in the system if there is no more of the indicated NDC. I know how to switch. Like if there's an NDC of 2102 for Lisinopril but we're out or not enough to fill but theres a bottle on the shelf, same strength but an NDC of 2346 . Can I just change or is there a specific set of rules of when its allowed. I know how to oos it .But I dont want to make a mistake an oos it if changing the NDC is an option.

5. What are the commands to allow me to make changes to their prescriptions like add or stop readyfill and change from a 90 day supply to a 30 day supply .

Thank you for any help or advice you can give me. I feel like I'm being more of a burden to my coworkers than a help .I didnt get properly trained an we are short staffed an a very busy location .At most theres only 3 techs on at a time .Sometimes only 2 trying to jugle drop off production an drive thru .

1. It'd be better to have someone show you. Yeah they're busy yeah yeah.

2. QT and select patient to see rejection.

3. Go in actual prescription and type H at bottom of the screen.

4. A few ways to do this ways to do this. If at QP, scan rx barcode on label and hit C.

5. Go in patients's profile. Hit X to display commands at bottom of screen. VE should take you to the page to enroll/unenroll ready fill

Don't feel bad if you don't know how to do much. That seems universal (including myself) when you first start at CVS. CVS is so busy, they're notoriously bad at training employees. Give it a few months and you'll feel pretty comfortable.

Thank you for your help! I know how to change the NDC but how do I know if its appropriate to do so? I dont want to screw something up an get them more angry with me or impatient.

And thank you animal for the encouragement! I feel like ive been thrown to the wolves an I'm left to sink or swim. I've been in the pharmacy since the 2nd week in Feb. An I feel like an idiot running around with my head cut off. I really am starting to feel like a burden to the other employees rather than a team member.

If you two or anyone else has any more tips or tricks on how an what to do. I'd appreciate it so much .There's so much to learn an your expected to know everything.

CVS has a system of "preferred NDCs" and they will be purple when you select them. However, my store is sometimes out of stock on the preferred NDC, so it's okay to change it. However, I wouldn't just go grab another bottle and change it to that NDC. When you "E" for Edit the rx, then (either "c" or "o" I can't remember right now) to change the NDC, the system will provide you with all the drugs that you can use to fill it, just different manufacturers. So you can select the non preferred one from that list. It'll likely make you credential to say that you are selecting the non preferred NDC because you don't have it in stock (or if the patient requests a certain manufacturer).

I totally get how you feel. You can even look at some of my first posts on SDN, and I had a list of questions that I was curious about, just like you. I felt like such a burden to my coworkers. Even with trainers coming in to teach me production, pick up, and drop off, I still had a lot of gaps in my knowledge. And to be honest, this is super common. Working as a technician is actually very complex, and CVS is absolutely horrible at "on-boarding". I know a lot of people who work at CVS, and they've all had the same experience as mine.

Keep asking questions! I still bring a little piece of paper with me everyday to write down things I'm not in a position to memorize in the moment (i.e. Mckesson password, how to search certain insurances, etc.) and over time I've started just knowing things. But really, keep asking questions, and you'll feel much better soon.

Thanks if only my coworkers were as patient and understanding. I can just feel their eyes looking at me with judgement. I know to them its so easy an common sense but to a new employee its like jumping into an endless black hole of screens/commands.

At the bottom of every screen is the menu bar that has a list of every command you can do at that screen. Reading is your friend. 😉

I agree but when you have 3 customers at pick up a line at drive thru an your only other tech on duty is tied up at drop off. Reading a list of commands an the whole trial an error thing is not an option.

Incorrect. That’s exactly when you CANNOT be asking for help when all you need to do is read the screen and follow the prompts. That’s the point of the classes, modules, and training days. After all that, it’s time to read for yourself. Contrary to what nice people say it actually is not that hard. It takes repetition sure but not that much brain power.

Hi, I am also a new CVS Tech hire. Am wondering if now that you have been there a bit if you could help me? Just have a few questions about rx system.
1. qt - pull up problem with rx, how to see more to resolve and how to put message in note.
2. How to get back to home screen.
3. Where do you enter new insurance
4. What to do if rejects due to insurance.

I know these sound very simple but they are holding me up. I am brand new and just finished all the modules.
Thanks in advance.

I don't understand why you guys are coming here for CVS technician training. If you aren't getting proper training, let them know. Otherwise, ask the people you actually work with because they usually send you to training stores to get hands on training.TALK to the people in person if you don't understand. There's nothing to be ashamed of if you are just starting out.

No offense intended, but how do you not know the answers to these questions if you did the modules??? All my techs were just copying the answers off of the one technician that actually read the modules when i first took over a struggling pharmacy. I definitely put a stop to that.

people actually pay attention to the modules? lol I always trained my techs and interns hands on and that's how I learned the best too

likewise, but some people learn differently.

I tried my best to get the most out of the modules, but there is sort of a rush to complete them if you complete them all within the shift allotted. I think my On the Job Training will be more beneficial and a better opportunity to really learn.

my computer based training was literally only about protecting patient information. Then came on the job training and that was literally just them saying, "alright, start working."
I slowed the whole front and drive thru down but I think it bought the data entry, product dispensing, and pharmacist some time to get through catch up work. But I have to say I do not like how the customers treat me every day. I am glad I am leaving this week...
