Hi guys,

I have offers from CVS and Walmart for a staff pharmacist position. I need help determining which of the two chains to join. I think you get more help at walmart , lunch break and shorter work hours. Am I right? Your advice will be appreciated. Thanks

If I haven't done retail at all and just from looking at all the threads on this site alone, I'd pick Walmart over CVS. That being said, you should pick Walmart for the shorter working hours and no nonsense phone calls that you'd have to make (CVS makes you do that). The 14-hour shift without a lunch break will get to you. Plus, I don't believe Wal-mart has drive-thrus.

Beyond a doubt pick Wal-Mart. CVS has really diminished pharmacist support. They have added countless requirements from you & decreased
your technician's hours. I fully believe CVS is not practicing what they preach. They claim to "care" for their customers. Yet, they give them stores with inadequate staffing & annoying phone calls for refills. If the company really put their money where their mouth is they'd provide the pharmacist with complete staffing & let the pharmacist do what they were trained to do. JMO.

Personally, I would go find some small independent pharmacy😉

From what I have heard from colleagues who are working at either store. Those who work for Wal-Mart seem to be happier. I believe CVS does run you on 14 hour shifts with no breaks. Wal-Mart pretty much allows you to run things the way you want and I believe the stock benefits are better as well.

With that being said, I work for a small independent. I get time and a half for OT, M-F 9am-6pm hours. I never work nights or weekends and I get 100% medical insurance for me and my family. This is not the case for all independents, but you may want to go that route. Good Luck!

I work for several indy's part-time (semi-retired from the profession)-but from what I hear from some buds at cvs it is has gone from bad to really horrific at some cvs locations with the extra "tasks",etc that are being added and hrs also being slashed-most everyone I know that works at wallyworld seems o.k.-some of them are very busy but they also seem to have adequate support staff and from what I hear the pay is close if not better that what cvs is offering--
just my 2 cents worth-good luck with your choice...

I couldn't put this better. That's why after 10 years I left. CVS will feed you a bunch of lines about how they support the patients health, and will constantly tell you what a great company it is... But they don't talk about the metrics (measures of performance), the long hours, the lack of tech support, constantly cutting costs by taking away your support while piling more responsibility on you. Oh, and let's not forget the forced phone calls, programs, immunizations you have to give, and the ridiculous other minutiae you are responsible for.
I hate retail but go for Walmart.
I know at least 10 CVS pharmacists that have quit this year and know of many more looking for other jobs.
