Hello SDN'ers! I am deciding between Pritzker and Case, and I was wondering if you all would share your opinions. I know a lot of you are excited about Pritzker, but what about Case? I'm particularly interested in comparing the academic repuatations, costs of living, and lifestyles at each school. Also, does anyone know the current state of the relationship between the Cleveland Clinic and Case?

Thanks!!

meems,
Welcome to SDN! I just couldn't bear to see your first post go unanswered. I got into Pritzker (which you might have seen in another thread on them) but I turned down my interview offer at Case, so I can't help much. I know that I applied to Case because of their curriculum. It is very different from Pritzker's, from what I can tell. If location isn't a factor for you (it was for me), then I would base most of your decision on your personal learning style. The hospitals are both great, but I am slightly biased towards Pritzker's residency placement. Also, think about how much you value getting out of classes pretty early on a regular basis (at Case). You might have more time to volunteer/do research. At least these are both great schools, and you likely can't go wrong either way. Good luck with your decision.

go to Case I wish they interviewed me

sorry to bump this old thread, but I haven't been around for a while.

I was accepted to both Case and Pritzker and will be attending Prtizker this fall.

As gel pointed out the main difference is the curriculums(curricula?). At Case you do a lot of PBL, they call it Case Based Learning (hahaha), and at Pritzker you have more lecutre time. I came into the process thinking either style would be fine by me, but with a lot self reflection on the classses I learned the best in as an undergraduate, I really felt like lecture time was the way to go. I like to HEAR the material presented not just read it from the book. Think about how you most want to learn.

I think these are very similiar schools in a lot of other respects. The students at both felt well taken care of by administration and said they had great relationships with profs/faculty members. Both schools gave me the impression that they are really there for their students.

If you pull out a set of prestige rankings (the usnews) you're gonna find case and pritzker just aout tied. I didn't really care about this, I think the only really valuable information that is related to 'prestige' is how well schoools match. I want to go into in academic medicine (which pritzker prides themselves on preparing people for) and Pritzker's match list reflects that. As many matches at the top hospitals as any of the other matchlists i'd seen; duke, hopkins, SF, stanford.

Case's match wasn't in the same league as far as academic medicine is concerned. However Case does have the Primary Care Track which I think would provide you with a lot more opportunities/experiences than Pritkzer if you are sure you want to go into primary care.

Aside from the schools themselves I was much more excited about the prospect of living in Chicago than in Cleveland. I think Cleveland was fine, and thuroughly livable, I just wouldn't say I was EXCITED about living there.

That's about how I broke down the schools. If I had different interestes/learning style I may well have picked case. I think it's a great school, just not quite the right fit for me. good luck with your enviable decision :)

You may wanna take a look at the money involved too. Case is really expensive, and doesn't seem to give a lot of aid. As far as clinical experience, Case is entering into talks to join with the Cleveland Clinic, so that ought to be finished up by our third year (I am from Cleveland, and it was reported in all the loval papers. Apparently they are waiting to finalize it until one of the presidents of either the university or clinic step retire, because they said a change in leadership during the talks would be hectic.) Good luck making the choice, maybe I'll cya round next year.

Were you invited to apply to the Dean's Scholarship at Case? If you get it, it will shave 20k off tuition every year. And I believe that Case freezes your tuition for the length of your stay there (i.e. 4 years); double-check this with them. Also, Cleveland is a lot cheaper to live in than Chicago.

I personally really value having time in the PM to do your own things. You are busy in med school as it is, and staying in classes all day long will not help.

It is difficult to compare Chicago and Case matchlists straight up. First of all, Chicago states plain and simple that it wants to produce academic physicians (i.e. specialists) while Case is more balanced in its perspective. Secondly, Case has 60% in-state requirement so for the kids from Ohio, I don't think that they are shooting for UCSF or Mass General most of the time! On the other hands, Chicago might have more kids from the NE who wants to go back to Boston or NYC.

I personally feel that reputation wise, they are fairly equal. If you want to go to Case in heart, then go for it!

I'd go with Pringles...

go to Case please
go to Case please

Pritzker -- chicago is much cooler while the schools are pretty equal!
