Do all medical students have to complete a thesis before graduating at CWRU? Also, is it pointless to apply without extensive research experience?

Yup. Starting for the class of 2009, every Case student (whether in the University Program or in College Program) will need to write a thesis to graduate. You can still apply without research experience. I'd imagine, though, it'd be more difficult to get accepted now that research has taken a prominent role in the Case curriculum.

Instead of looking at it as an additional graduation requirement, think of it as another way the new dean is making the school better. He's determined to buff up the school's reputation and increase our ranking. He's probably trying to mold Case after Yale, where he's from.

With that said, the Class of 2008 feels very relieved they don't have to do this. Additional requirements always suck. 😀

Just a note, Case's ranking have continued to fall in recent years. They were thinking that last year they would make the top ten in research dollars, not even close.

other schools are beginning to do this, or have been doing this to give students a more "varied" medical school experience.

ucsd, uc davis, case etc...

my bf wrote a "strong" letter to the committee in charge of this (he just graduated) and asked them to make it optional. guess they didn't listen.

that aside, case is UNBELIEVABLE!!!

this whole research thing does bring it down a notch in my eye. i was so gung ho about applying and now...i'm just not sure anymore. oh, and they're a numbers school.

Case has changed in recent years from a school that focussed on the applicant to a school that focusses on numbers now. They want great MCATs, GPA ,and undergrad; only problem is that it has backfired in the past.

lol!!! i know of a guy that it backfired on. they sent him to sensitivity training!

I dunno about you, but i'm psyched they decided to give us the tuition freeze!
to anyone thinking about Case: granted i've only been here for two weeks, but i can't imagine myself anywhere else. The school is very receptive to student input (hence the reinstatement of the tuition freeze for us...although i don't know if they will continue with that for '09 folks) and they seem to really care about our well being (hence all of the great lunches)
The thesis requirement will serve you well in the long run, especially if you are looking at matching in a competitive residency.
Taurus...you start studying for biochem? we got a new thing in our boxes about the histopathology portion of the committee. it's gonna be an intense 20 days...
Where's exmike and juddson?

Couldn't a school that has high standards for numbers have high standards for other things as well? Why do people seem to believe that schools either expect high numbers or look at the whole applicant, but not both?

As for Case, I met the new dean when I interviewed and he said that he was making a strong effort to increase the school's reputation/ranking. In order to move up on the research rankings, you have to have a stronger commitment to research and it helps to have students with better numbers.
