There is no reason to take offense to patients initial attitude. It's got jack to do with you. So, get a thick skin and don't worry about it. Just concentrate on the goal of having as positive an interaction as possible. Learning to manipulate people's behavior (including our own) is a big part of becoming a successful clinician. Even if you don't want to be a clinician, the whole "I shouldn't have to put up with this crap" attitude doesn't make the experience easier on anyone. You have to put up with it. Deal!

Try and get a history from one of these people. Try to exam them while they call you a cocksker. Until you have walked through our shoes you can't begin to understand the bullsht that we put up with while wearing a smile. I dont pay 30K a year to be treated like I'm the scum of the earth by patients. I suggest you not give me advice on something that you havent yourself experienced. Go back to counting your pills.

That's a chunk of animosity there, hm? Well, whether you want to appreciate it or not, my experience does apply to yours. There are two types of patients: those who are capable of controlling their actions and those who are not. The latter you just have put up with, because you know that they are incompetent in some way. You get more of them than I do, but I get some of them. The former we share commonly. These patients don't get magically nicer when they come to a pharmacy. And if you choose to, you can manipulate their behavior. It takes time, effort, and the willingness to critique and change your own behaviors. Unless you take the inititive and are willing to take responsibility for the quality of your patient interactions, they are going to suck. It's that simple.

Part of the problem is that a lot of patients don't see themselves as having any real responsibility for their actions and their illness - so unless the doctor "cures" them with a magic treatment the doctor is failing.

This morning someone in pharm commented about how people are rude to those working in pharmacies but not to their physicians. It's funny how misperceptions go both ways. 👍

Another part of the problem is that people are less likely to "bother" their physicians by giving positive feedback. So when you do something right you are not able to distinguish it from doing something neutral. It's one of the drawbacks of people percieving your time as being important. I get positive feedback all the time because I am viewed as easily accessible. It gives me a good opportunity to perpetually rework my strategies and find out how to get people to act how I want them to act.

When I first started working five years ago, I was lucky to keep those cranky ass Dutch farmers from Lynden from biting my head off the second I opened my mouth. Then one day I was like... "**** this. I don't care if they are rude, bitchy and obnoxious. I'm not going to treat any of them a damn bit differently. If they want to act like an ass when I am respectful and kind to them then it is their friggin personal problem." Then alot of them quit treating me like crap, especially the repeat patients. It is amazing how differently people will act if they see you as tolerant and patient. It's a persona you really have to develop, though. But, you do get back what you put out in most cases.
