"As was already reported some 40 years ago, dental students appear to harbour a widespread and persistent cynicism about the ethics of their future profession"
Good. As soon as a healthy cynicism disappears, the corruption sets in.
Human nature is far to dangerous to not be dealt with under several layers of protection. Cynicism is one such vital layer.
...like oven mittens in a hot oven to pick up a hot casserole and not get burned.
...or, like brushing ones teeth regularly with toothpaste and flossing, such is a healthy cynicism a protection against professional 'plaque' and decay.
Seems like the profession of dentistry has only improved in general over the last 40 years. Obviously, then, such cynicism is a good thing.
