Hey guys, I'm new to SDNF. I'm taking the MCAT in may, and hope to get into Stony Brook through early decision. Has anyone out there a cyto degree, and do you feel it hurt you during applications? Also, has anyone applied to SBU through early decision?

Why would you think it would hurt you? No one is going to tell you during interviews, "Well, you already got one professional medical degree, so you can't have another one, see you later."

The vast majority of cytotechs did not get a cytotech degree so that they could then go to medical school. They did it so they could be cytotechs. Like anyone who has pursued one professional field and then wants to go into another, you will get questions as to why you are changing fields, what isn't good about the one you are in, etc etc. Those are real questions which you need to have answers for. If you have the answers, great.

no of course not, but i have heard anecdotally that some schools look down on having a prior medical degree.

From what I've heard, nursing is the only professional degree that is looked down on - mostly because there is such a nursing shortage and a surplus of qualified applicants for medical school.

I am a cytotechnologist who applied and was accepted to medical school this cycle. I think that being a cytotech worked in my favor but that may be because I am 99% certain that I want to go into pathology and it is a logical progression.
