I came across a question today which said the major mech. for hep c induced liver damage is the host response against the virus-infected cells, and that there is no direct viral cytotoxic effect. That makes sense, but it got me thinking, are there any viruses that have a direct cytotoxic effect? Besides HIV, which does attack CD4, is it the general rule that most viruses dont have any direct cytopathic effects?
I guess Hep B probably does because it integrates into the host genome...
