Do I *have* to retake a prereq if I made a D to be accepted to a DO school??? I received credit for the course from my university if it means anything at all to this situation.

It's my only blemish and I haven't taken ochem 2 in 5 years... I have absolutely no reason to take it unless it is absolutely necessary to be allowed to matriculate or something. Everything else is gravy.

I attempted a search through several methods and I didn't really find anything concrete, particularly for osteopathic schools. Thanks!

Unless the school gives a waver or allows you to use biochem as a substitute, you'll have to retake. Just do it at a community college.

Every school I remember looking at stated you must make a minimum grade of C in all prereqs. Get an ochem review book to refresh you of ochem I concepts and enroll at your local community college.

This is extremely disheartening... I guess it can't hurt to ask if my A in biochem would be an adequate substitute, but I won't be getting my hopes up. I have no idea how I overlooked this.

If anyone can offer any tips to take this course essentially cold it would be much appreciated! Furthermore, does anyone think it will actually be easier to take this class at a community college or is that myth? I live very close to a university so the convenience is there. To be frank I could get a C and not give a damn, but I am slightly worried about taking the course at the university and it being very difficult to get back on the horse again so to speak. The extra 30 minute commute to a CC would be worth it if the consensus was that it would be easier.

Thank you for your prompt response!

Edit: Just saw the other responses. Thanks for your input.

The only reason for concern is the killer career I have that has delayed my start to school anyways (well, and a growing family haha). I generally work 60 hours a week.

Probably... but if you've already been accepted I guess you could double-check with the school.

It really depends. I took O.Chem in a CC, but my class was at least 50% career changers with BA's from the best UCs and CSUs and another chunk were overflow students from the local university. The course was not a joke, but my friend that went to the CC 45 minutes away from the city had "take home" exams for O.Chem.

More and more schools are accepting biochem in replace of Ochem II. You'll need to check with individual schools.

What part of "C or better grade in pre-reqs" is too difficult to understand?

It sounds like you'll definitely need to retake. You can look into the online organic series from UNE. I have heard that these classes are well-received from other med schools and are usually accepted.

If you really are going into orgo cold, maybe you should get back on the horse for the sake of your foundation for ms1 classes, not just for the sake of getting your foot in the door.

Sorry, boss. The only school I intend to apply to does not say anything about that anywhere on their website so I figured I would ask here.

I'll call.

Only one school? You must be very confident of your chances. If finances permit, you be best served to broaden your reach. Suppose you go interview and decide you hate the place? Or you bomb the interview?

To be frank, yes. Without going into detail, there is only one place I will apply to/attend (if given the honor) and it is the only reason I am going DO. The location is very, very important. I know it' strange. Like I said, it's the only blemish on my resume and any DO vs. MD stupid threading doesn't really apply to my situation as I want to do primary care in the end.

I appreciate the help guys. Seems like a nice community here. I'm going to contact the school. Worst case scenario I take the course again.

Having retaken Orgo after getting am"D" in the second semester and then getting accepted to several DO schools, here is my advice:

1) If at all possible, retake the whole year, preferably with the same professor so you know exactly what to expect and have the prerequisite knowledge base, since different schools cover different material in the first semester.
2) Yes, orgo is generally substantially easier at CC's, from what everyone has told me and my own experience. For example, when I retook orgo at a CC, the exams were multiple-choice. Not to mention that CC orgo is way less expensive.
3) If you have a choice of different professors, go with whatever one has the highest "easiness" rating on ratemyprofessor. I did this and am glad I did.

Remember, you only need to learn enough orgo to get an "A" and get you through the MCAT (which isn't very detailed) - you're not pursuing a degree in chemistry. If you do well on the MCAT BS section, nobody will question your understanding of the material.

😵 My question would be: "What are you going to do for residency" It's not like you really get a choice and 90 % of us had to move to finish training.

If you're actually James Franco you can replace any prerequisite with this:

If not, you're -very likely- looking at a retake, unless you have a strong upward trend. You'll also likely severely limit the number of interviews you receive and thus the schools that you might be able to attend come interview time.

You will have to take it over again, most schools require a minimum of C in all required coursework.
