Does anyone know if there is any good D.O EM residencies? What do you think about Doctors hospital, Midwestern, and Lehigh Valley?
Should I just go for my MD choices?
Thanx

Sure there are good DO EM residencies. It simply takes a bit of research to find out about them. I am a DO and I did an MD residency, but the DO residencies that are well established (Doctors, Grandview, those in MI) are going to be safe bets. You just need to research your choices.

I'm a resident at Oklahoma State University Medical Center's EM program. We've got a lot to offer: decent volume/resident, good pathology, excellent didactics, many opportunites for moonlighting. We recently got a new set of attendings who all graduated from the EM program in OKC, which is known for being a strong program.

Don't discount the DO EM programs, but *do* check into the details of any that you're considering.

thank you for your reply..so you think doctors in columbus is good? and how exactly will I find out which ones are the best? I mean i don't really want to rely on word of mouth. Is there any reliable source that assesses and compares the D.O. programs with each other?

I would do the same thing that you would do for an ACGME program. Check the program websites, speak with residents and people who know. If interested, set up an elective rotation.

Here are a couple programs I feel are excellent:

St. Barnabas, Bronx, NY: http://www.stbarnabashospital.org/

Albert Einstein, Philly: (dual AOA/ACGME): http://www.einstein.edu/hp/res_em_med.html (also on freida website)

and here is a new program I thought was very interesting:

Bottom line, you have to research the AOA programs just as you would an ACGME program. There are excellent Osteopathic EM programs out there.

Unfortunately, I think the only way you can really get a feel for a program (be they MD or DO) is to get an interview and go with your gut feelings. There ARE some good DO EM programs, but there are also some BAD DO EM programs out there.

I know, you are going ot ask which ones are the bad ones. Well, you won't really find that information here on SDN, and EM is a small world so I doubt anyone is going to post them.

But let me just give you this warning. When I was an M3, there was an intern at the place I was rotating at. She had matched at a DO EM program as a PGY2-4, and after internship left for there. Got an aprtment, etc. 6 months into her second year hte program suddenly shut down. I don't know why, if it was funding or accredidation (I don't know how the DO EM programs are accredited) or hospital politics, or the ED lost their contract, or what. But she was poop out of luck. She got lucky enough to go to another DO EM program, which she was finally able to graduate from, but that's a sticky situation.

I would say go and interview at the progrmas you have "heard" about. THe more established ones with a good amount of alumni.

This is my programs website. Awesome place. Probably one of the best if not the best DO EM program. Better than a lot of allopathic places.

So, I have interviewed at both, and got a good vibe from both Doctors and LVH..Which one is better? 🙂

not-a-nerd,

Simple answer to your solution. You have to go were you heart and mind tells you to. In the end, no matter how much thinking you do, it all comes down to putting your final rank in. The match isnt about how strong a program is necessarily. It may also be whether or not the location is good, if the people are nice, how the weather is, how the benefits are, and will you be close to family. These are essential. You've already chosen some of the better DO programs academically. Now you have to choose the program you will be happy at.

There are definitely some good ones out there. Lehigh Valley seemed top notch, and has the advantage of being a high acuity center, I was impressed with the residents that I met while I was up in that area, but I can't say much more than that as I did not rotate there.

I do think that if you're interested in a midwestern program, you should give a good look at Freeman Health in Joplin Mo, Integris Southwest in OKC, and OSU-Tulsa Regional in Tulsa.

The Freeman health system is downright impressive for being in a community of 45,000, but they service an area of close to 500,000 and they have a high acuity level 2 hospital which is one of my favorite hospitals that I've been in, including Lehigh-Mullenberg.

Then there is Southwest, which is a good program, they don't have quite the high level as they are on a rotating level 2 system, so they farm out their trauma months at OU's level 1 in OKC, but they do get a fair bit of gun/knife wounds and plenty of your bread/butter EM visits as they run about 75,000 visits a year. Add in their top notch diadactics and lectures, and you've got a good program.

Then there is Tulsa, they're going through some attending changes, but most of the new attendings came from the group that run's and/or graduated from the Southwest program, so again, their didactics were strong to begin with, but I feel like the weekly cases that they do and just the particular attendings that they brought in will push the program even more, then add in that TRMC's programs are now owned by the state and that there is a huge push to bring TRMC back up to a level 2 if not a level 1 hospital, so this is the program of the 3 which probably has the most potential to surpass the others in the next couple of years in acuity and level of care that they handle.

I don't know much about Frankford, and to be honest, I was torn between IM and EM and IM won out, I'm interviewing at Frankford, but for the IM portion. The ones I mentioned are the ones I have experience with or have been in the hospital enough to get a feel for the program.
