American Medical Student Association Announces Election of 57th National President

Reston, Va.- The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the nation’s largest, independent medical student organization, with nearly 65,000 members, today announces the election of Jay D. Bhatt as the 2006-2007 National President. The membership elected Bhatt, a fourth-year student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), at the organization’s recent 56th annual convention.

“AMSA has become like a family, a place where I have been able to gather with like-minded individuals to speak out with, to engage in advocacy with and to have fun with,” says Bhatt. “AMSA has taken leadership development to the next level and given me so much. I’m excited to give back and work together with our membership, staff and leadership to increase visibility, strengthen our advocacy for patients and medical education.”

Bhatt recently served as AMSA’s 2005-2006 National Vice-President and as the National Chair of the organization’s Community and Public Health Action Committee from 2004-2005. In addition to AMSA, Bhatt serves on the Boards of the American Public Health Association, American College of Preventive Medicine and the Student Health Alliance. He is also a National Health Service Corps scholar, honored for his commitment to the underserved.

Bhatt holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Chicago, and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He will be taking a yearlong hiatus from his medical training at PCOM to work in the national office of AMSA.
