Is it possible to start D.O. school and then after one year, switch to M.D. school? My friend suggested this to me, and I am not sure one could do this.

OP, you are not permitted to start the same thread in more than one forum. Please pick one forum and only post it once. Also, please use the search function before starting new threads, as this topic has been discussed to death. The answer to your question is no, you would not be able to transfer from a DO school to an MD school.
