hey everybody, i talked to the dentist i shadow and he said d-school can suck hardcore sometimes so i asked him how he got through the tough times. he said he promised himself that as soon as he got his first pay check he would buy himself something really nice. his choice was two leather couches, which he loves.

my question: if you promise yourself something what would it be? what would/does keep you motivated?

i'm thinking maybe a trip somewhere or a mickey mantle rookie card.

Three month prepay of your student loan premium.😛

a nice new Beamer or Mercedes

My motivation isn't buying anything, but putting the wheels in motion for all of the skills and techniques and training that I've learned.

The application of those things, and the fact that I'll be calling the shots for my patients, is reward enough.

let me restate

I dont think using a motivational like what you are going to buy with your first pay check is going to be on your mind when your 2 years in, taking 30 credit hours, and trying to find a root tip on your first extraction. Your love for dentistry and being your own boss should be enough.

One day being able to provide for my family, while simultaneously helping others and all the while doing something I enjoy...that is my motivation

No, it's all about being a "chick magnet". DP

Good motivation for me starting in August will be not worrying about penny pinching at the supermarket because all of the healthy foods are more expensive than the junk foods...go figure... Also, not stressing about putting gas in my car and maybe buy new running shoes every 6 months instead of keeping the same ones for 5 years.😱

With the exception of Gavin, the rest of the replies have been shallow at best.

Psi, Oh great one... why don't you enlighten the rest of us "shallow" people with your deep and meaningful source of motivation?

I just keep telling myself that all the fast cars, fast money, and fast women will be worth it, and that's enough to fuel my fire.

For school, I just keep on going and remember how much I'm paying for it. I think of my family and being able to provide for them - kids work wonders for your motivation. I always remind myself that it's only a few short years; it's nice to think of the extra time I'll have with my family when I begin to practice.

For debt motivation, I'm going to follow this plan: I know a guy who graduated in '84 with over $200k in debt. He and his wife picked things that they "HAD to have": he bought a boat, she bought a piano. Then they rented a house and lived like paupers for 4 years until the loans were paid off. He's doing pretty well today.

Yes. I am shallow. My only motivation is income. 😛

I don't know about a few short year; it feel more like four long ones to me, but my motivation is knowing that I will have a career that give me time off to spend with my wife and hopefully future children because there is no time right now.

Im not being a troll, but this post actually made me laugh out loud.

Nice.

I also only hire hot hygienists and assistants. Something else for motivation....

dude dental school is so rough, you will just want to be able to go to the movies or not study a weekend just anything to make you feel like a human being again. Going on exotic trips or buying cars will be the last thing on your mind. you will just want sleep and time to watch tv.

dental school is more than rough

My greatest pleasure comes now when I take an afternoon off 'not to study'....or dare I..take 2 off.

The last thing on my mind is what I'm going to do in a few years when I graduate.

yeah, to be honest, having been in dental school, everything seems so short term now (especially since we have block exam system). Spring break starts this weekend, and I have a major exam tomorrow...been looking forward to the break for like a month (even though the break is only a week long). There are just so much busy work in dental school that a short break from any sort of studying is something that's worth looking forward to. Even thinking about going out on Friday nights just makes me want to work harder towards that goal. Long term goals can wait.

back to studying

When I'm really stressed and tired from school I always remind myself how lucky I am to be able to go to college and that it's a blessing to be healthy and able to do whatever I want in a free country.

But then again, I haven't experienced dental school...yet. Haha.

Hey, this is pretty much exactly what I've done since I graduated. It's like you read my mind. 😎
